Both of these medical advances are incredible because they are tailor-made and therefore provide accurate and effective treatments for the patients. 2. What do you know about genes?Pre-readingI know that genes are found in the cells of all livin

4、g things. Genes are very small and carry the DNA information which decides what we become. All living organisms have different genes; therefore, no two individuals are 100% alike, even though there may be similarities. At DNA level, not even identical twins are the same. Scientists are studying gene

How do you understand the title “The future is in our genes”?Pre-readingGenes play a critical role in life heritage. New generat

According to the title and the illustrations, what is covered in the lecture? Genes play a critical role in shaping our lives. However, questions arise

By correcting abnormal genes early on.While readingA “designer baby” is a baby whose characteristics have been specifically selected through genome editing before it is born. 4. What is a “designer baby”?5. What does the lecturer compare uncont

12、rolled genome editing to?The lecturer compares it to a car out of control. While readingThe lecturer feels very excited about genome editing. He describes it as the most “game-changing” among the many wonderful scientific developments and “one of the greatest innovations in the history of science”.

13、However, he is also concerned that this technology might not be used appropriately. He lists a few moral issues before warning that we need to put appropriate controls in place to prevent genome editing from running wild and make sure it will work to our advantage. 6. How does the lecturer feel abou

14、t genome editing? Find evidence from the lecture transcript to support your opinion. While readingPost-reading1. The lecturer mentions that one day we will be able to create “designer babies”. What do you think of “designer babies”?I dont think we should design babies unless it is because of serious

15、physical or mental health concerns. There is no need to design a baby if its parents are perfectly healthy. Natural gene selection ensures diversity among our species, so if “designer babies” become the norm, the diversity level will drop. Over time, this could lead to the majority of people being b

Humans could evolve into “super-beings”, which some people may believe to be good for us, but interfering with our natural evolution could result in disaster. I dont think we should take the chan

Why?I expect them to be strong and healthy enough to avoid any diseases. But I dont believe they would grow up as designed. You see, although we could edit the genome, yet we

18、 could not control the growing environment. People who grow up in different environments will have different characteristics. That is to say, although we could put in the designed information in the genes, we could not control the influence of the environment to the “designer baby”.Post-reading3. Wh

19、at bad results do you think genome editing would produce?Genome editing could cause terrible disasters to both the product and the whole world. On the one hand, genome editing technology is far from mature. The slightest error would lead to immeasurable results. A deformed creature or even a monster

20、 could be produced instead of a normal human being, which could be out of control, as is described in some science fictions. Such kind of result would put the product in unbelievable pain and suffering. They could not live a normal life in this world. Post-readingOn the other hand, if genome editing

Then if the technology was used to produce a normal human being, what would be the relationship between the produced person and the person its gene came fr

If the new technology was taken advantage of for ill purposes, genetic viruses, genetic weapons, or even new species against mankind might be produced, each of which would be a disaster for mankind.Post-read

23、ing4. What controls can we put in place to make sure that genome editing will work to our advantage?Governments around the world should work together to make laws and regulations about when genome editing can and cannot be used. First, these laws and regulations should cover various aspects of genom

24、e editing, such as ethical issues and security, and they may have to be introduced at multiple levelsglobal, national and even regional. Second, genome editing equipment needs to be strictly controlled so that it does not get into the wrong hands. Finally, governments, scientists, stakeholders and the public need to work together to enforce appropriate usage of genome editing. The application of these laws regarding genome editing will only be successful if all parties concerned cooperate.1. Finish B1 on Page 33.2. Finish Parts A & B on Page 69.Homework
