5、long,” I told him confidently. A few days later, something did come along in the shape of a large yellow school bus that we were following down a road. It was 3 p.m., and as our carcreptbehind, we watched the flashing lights signal each coming stop. The stop sign would pop out, the doors would open,

6、 and a child would jump from the high step.I knew he liked to drive and seemed tosavorthe times when we had to rent a truck to move something. He had driven us over the mountains to our new home, through driving rainstorms on winding roads. Behind the wheel, he seemed fearless.“You could drive that

13、erunny nose.That bus became thebumblebeethat buzzed around me. I pictured Tom happily going off to work again, climbing behind that giantsteeringwheel and setting off on his daily route. My enthusiasm must haveintriguedTom because Ioverheardhim on the phone with the transportation department.He was

14、hired,providinghe could pass the physical performance test and acquire the school bus drivers license. This was no easy task, and he spent hours studying manuals and learning tomaneuverthe bus down narrow streets and through heavy traffic. He had to train forevacuation, dragging a heavy load down th

15、e busaisleand jumping from the emergency door.He was proud he got his drivers license. The very next morning, he was given a bus and a route sheet. Im sure he was nervous, but Tom will accept any mission. Driving the bus turned outrewarding, and Tom isthrivingin his new role. I think he likes being

16、the “big guy” on the road. He now knows every street in our town. Hes back to checking the weather, and setting the alarm again.He is now “Mr. Tom” to his riders and their parents. I hear he is quite amazing. He greets the children with high-fives andcompliments. He waits patiently while one high-sc

He listens carefully to the ones who have speaking issues, and hetucksblankets around the girl in the wheelchair He wipes the runny noses and wishes the kids a good day when they arrive.When the pre-K children aredismissedand climb aboard, he straps them into car

Then comes their favorite part, where they get to shout after hours spent in their quiet classroom. “Goodbye,

19、 teachers!” yells Mr. Tom. The little ones repeat it. “Goodbye, school!” Again, they repeat, joyfully. Mr. Tom then yells out the last two lines, and the children laugh and repeatat the top of their lungs.He has been driving the bus for seven years. He gets lots of notes from grateful parents, thank

20、ing him for keeping their child safe and well-cared for. Sometimes, while Im out runningerrands, a school bus passes me.
