The Yellow River, Chinas second longest river, got its name from the yellow soil carried along in its water. It flows for about 5,464 kilometres, from the remote snow-capped mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the vast Bohai Sea. It is because of the rivers important role in developing

、agriculture and establishing civilization that it is symbolically referred to as the Mother River of China.Archaeological evidence shows that farming societies first appeared on the banks of the Yellow River as far back as 7,000 years ago. It is really easy to see why these societies considered it a

、n ideal place for farming. The land was flat and its soil was refreshed by silt after every flood. The river not only provided nutrient-rich soil, but also water for irrigation. Therefore, it came as no surprise that a wide variety of crops were grown along the river, typically wheat and soya beans,

、 which were well-suited to the dry climate of this area.Today, the river does maintain a significant position as agriculture along its banks continues to expand and thrive. Thanks to new agricultural methods, rain-fed crops such as rice have become more common in the region. Additionally, eco-agricu

、ltural practices work side by side with traditional ones to promote sustainable development of farming.Without doubt, the Yellow River will continue to bring such agricultural abundance to China that life without its priceless gifts would be unimaginable.

Integrated skills p22Co

Read the article and answer the following questions. Sarah

Chemical farmingThe use of chemicals in farming is widespread with more than 90 per cent of the worlds farmers using artificial fertilizers and pesticides. Such chemicals are highly effective, but unfortunately they can have damaging impacts. Understanding more about the advantages and disadvant

、ages of using chemicals in farming will help you decide which side of the fence you stand on, and ultimately, what food you will eat!The fact is that chemicals work faster than organic products. Since they release nutrients quickly, chemical fertilizers enrich poor soil rapidly. This allows plants t

、o grow faster than they would with organic fertilizers, such as animal waste. Similarly, the quick actions of artificial pesticides make it easy to protect crops from infections or pests. It follows that the use of chemicals brings immediate results, in terms of both plant growth and protection.Neve

、rtheless, the downsides of using chemicals in farming are obvious. These chemicals enter our water and soil very easily, and tend to remain in the environment for decades, slowly breaking down, or not at all. Apart from polluting the environment, they also affect all living organisms, either immedia

、tely or over long periods of time. For example, the worlds bee population has declined alarmingly over the last few years, mainly due to the overuse of pesticides. Similarly, studies have found that a range of diseases, such as cancers in humans, are linked to chemicals used in farming. A growing aw

、areness of the dangers of such chemicals led biologist Rachel Carson to publish her book Silent Spring in 1962, which revealed how the pesticide DDT was causing severe damage to the environment and to us. Carson argued that once pesticides entered the environment, they not only killed insects but al

、so made their way up the food chain to threaten birds and fish and, eventually, human populations. It is commonly acknowledged that chemicals are an important tool for farmers; however, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of chemicals before using them, and if possible, to minimize the damage

、they do.
