13、searching for the Amber Room has asked me to help them find the ship.The Aswan High DamAbu SimbelListen to the tape,which talks about a temple in Egypt,and then answer the questions.The Aswan High Dam in Egypt is one of the biggest man-made projects in the world.The dam was completed in 1970.It was

14、built for several reasons.First,the Nile River used to cause floods on much of the land near it every year.The dam has stopped the floods.Second,electricity can now be made from the water that rushes through the lower part of the dam.Now nearly half of Egypts electricity is produced from this dam.Bu

15、t the dam,which is one of the worlds largest,also caused several problems.The water in the lake behind the dam rose by 63 meters.It became necessary to move 53,000 people from their villages.Also,near the Aswan Dam there were a lot of temples,some more than three thousand years old.These temples wer

16、e in danger:when the dam was finished,many of them would be covered by water.One of the most important temples was at Abu Simbel.It was made from rock and had on the outside four large stone persons,each twenty metres high.Engineers studied the problem and suggested different plans to rescue the tem

17、ple.At last,they decided to move the whole temple stone by stone and build it again above the water of the new lake.The temple took four years to build and cost one billion US dollars.In all,1900 workers were needed to complete the project.Each stone was marked with a number.The pieces of stone were

18、 then carried to the new place for the temple,60 metres up a hill.In 1966,the dam was finished.Today Abu Simbel is still a quiet and beautiful place which visitors are glad to see.Architect I M Pei Few architects in modern history have equaled the work of Ieoh Ming Pei.Born in China in 1917,Ieoh Min

19、g Pei arrived in the US as a lively 17 year-old.He studied at Harvard,where he soon became a professor.In 1951,he travelled to Europe to see its great buildings for himself.Fro the next forty years he designed some of the worlds finest buildings.In 1964,he designed a library for President John F Ken

20、nedy.He also designed new parts of famous art museums in the capital cities of the US and France.One of the projects he most enjoyed doing was a museum for rock n roll music.Many architects design buildings more for artists than common people.Pei believes that buildings must be useful too.Pei also b

21、elieves that modern buildings can have a traditional look too.In 1982,he designed a hotel in a famous park in western Beijing.It was designed to look like both a traditional Chinese and modern Western hotel.However,not all of Peis buildings are famous.Many schools,hospitals,libraries,music halls and

22、 churches.Over the years,sixteen famous universities have honoured I M Pei,including two in China.The governments of China,France,Britain and the US have also honoured his hard work.Perhaps most important,he has given much of his money and time to Chinese students who have a strong interest in architecture.
