3、out spelling or grammar too much.Ernest Hemingway He was born on July 21,1899 in Oak Park,Chicago,U.S.A.He was the second of six children and born at his grandfathers house.He weighed at 4.22 kg and measured 58 cm long.When he was one,Hemingway caught his first fish on the shores of Big lake where h

4、is father had a cabin.Hemingway grew up in his Grandfathers house until the age of 6.Ernest Hemingway They moved to another house in Chicago in the city.The family was very focused on religion and attended Church regularly on sunday.The household was very stict with Hemingway receiving lashes from a

5、 razor strap administered by his father or a hairbrush from his mother.Hemingways mother taught her children music while his father taught him nature and survival.He received a single barrel 20 gauge shotgun at the age of 12Ernest Hemingway He attended high school and was interested in English,but n

6、ot much else.He also learned to box while in high school too.After graduating from high school,Hemingways father wanted him to go to college,but Hemingway wanted to join the armed forces and learn to write.His father forbid Hemingway from joining the armed forces in World War I so he became a journa

7、list instead.He was employed by the Kansas Star and worked there for a short bit of time.Ernest Hemingway In 1918,the American Red Cross was recruiting ambulance drivers for the Italian front.Hemingway volunteered to join and left for New York and then Italy in May.By June,Hemingway was in Italy fig

8、hting on the front.During one engagement where he was sent to bring chocolates to the troops his leg was injured,but he was still able to rescue an Italian soldier who had fallen into trouble.Ernest Hemingway He received the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery after World War I.After the war,Hemingway w

9、orked in Toronto and then Chicago where he met his future wife Hadley Richardson.Hadley and Hemingway wrote letters to each other until they married in 1921.They moved to Paris soon thereafter and lived among the Lost Generation of their time with writers such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein.Ernest

10、 Hemingway In Paris he wrote for several newspapers including the Toronto Star.Ezra Pound helped Ernest Hemingway with his stories and he became a mentor for Hemingway.Hemingway published his first book Three Stories and Ten Poems in 1923.His first son was also born in October of 1923 in Toronto,but

11、 they returned to Paris because Hemingway was bored in Canada.Ernest Hemingway In 1925,he began to publish more short stories and a few months later met F.Scott Fritzgerald.The two authors formed a friendship at first and then mutual hostility over Hemingways second book The Sun Also Rises.The book

12、was inspired by Hemingways intrigue about bull fighting.Hemingways marriage was deteriorating and soon Hadley became aware of an affair he was having with Pauline Pfeiffer.Ernest Hemingway Hadley divorced Hemingway in 1927 and Hemingway married Pauline Pfeiffer a year later.He published his next boo

13、k,Men Without Women soon after his marriage to his second wife.The couple traveled to Kansas where Hemingway had his second child Patrick in 1928.In Key West Hemingway worked on a draft of A Farewell to Arms.The birth of the baby in the story parallels the difficulties of Hemingways wife Pauline exc

14、ept Pauline didnt die.Ernest Hemingway He published A Farewell To Arms in 1929 which helped him become a major figure in writing.Throughout the 1930s,the Hemingways spent time between Key West and Wyoming.In 1936,Hemingway went to Spain with Martha Gelhorn,a writer and journalist.In 1937,Hemingway r

15、eported to newspapers back home on the Spanish civil war with Martha Gelhorn.Late in 1937,Pauline left Hemingway because of an affair she discovered he was having with Martha.Ernest Hemingway He wrote one of his most favorite books on the eve of world war II For Whom The Bells Toll which was nominat

16、ed for a Pulizer Prize in 1940.He also divorced Pauline in 1940 and married Martha.Hemingway also reported during World War II from Asia and Europe(even China).He stayed with Martha until he met another writer and journalist named Mary Welsh in 1945.Mary married Hemingway after divorcing Marth in 19

17、46.Ernest Hemingway A year later,Mary was pregnant,but the baby died before it was born.In 1954,Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in literature.In 1961,Hemingway,shot himself in the mouth with one of his guns from his youth.It wasnt until five years later that Mary admitted to the press that her hu

18、sband killed himself.Hemingways Style There is no true love and that death is always there.Hemingway uses his own experiences as a basis for his novels more than previous authors.First used the term Lost Generation in The Sun Also Rises.Get into groups of 4,5,6 Find 10 words that were difficult to understand in the story.Think of a 5 minute roleplay for the story in your group.You have 20 minutes to plan,and remember,EVERYONE MUST PARTICIPATE.
