It is an excerpt of a play that talks about a poor man became a millionaire and married a beautiful lady. This play was written by Mark Twain, who was the greatest humorist of t

2、he 19th century American literature writer as well as a great play writer. The feature of play presents clearly in this passage. It provides with dialogues and pictures related to the play. The red printed words show the scene of the drama, the narrators part, lines, stage direction and the names of

3、 characters are all printed with their capital forms. A few italic words presents as the describing and the surroundings of the scene. The rest of the words and expressions are all the dialogues made among all the characters. During the learning, the teacher should help Ss make use of the different

4、features of this passage to understand it. In this time, Ss have got reading strategies as skimming, scanning and reading for details. Besides, this is a play which tells a story. So the plot of the story is not very difficult. There are not too many new words or obscure words. Most of the words can

5、 be grasped in the context. Since it was a play full of dialogues, the words and expressions were not too formal indeed. Since it is a story about millionaire and money, so it is important for teacher to build the appropriate moral values in the teaching procedures. Ss havent learned plays before, t

6、hey were not familiar with its features and expressions. And it is an excerpt of a whole story, so it may be difficult for Ss to grasp the exact ideas of the passage. 9、nformation and analyzing characters.Difficult points:1. Ss had few experience to read a play, it may hard for them to analysis it. Play is different from some common materials they practiced in daily life. How to read a play, how to grasp the basic information will be taught by the teacher to help S

10、s.2. A play is made up with line, it is not easy to understand the inside activity by the conversations. Since play can be used as a speaking material, so invite Ss to read it loud and even act the scene will help them to appreciate it better.Teaching methods: The feature of this lesson is the mater

14、 dollar, and sold them out for 2 dollars.” The young man thought, thats the way he became rich. He doubled the price. Finally, the millionaire said: “ The third day, my father passed away and left me 6 million dollars. Then I became a millionaire.” The joke will rose a few questions about money. 1)

Because it is a reason why the two brothers chose him to be their better.5. The main topic in the play is around the bet. So read the passage a

30、nd search for answers to the questions: 1)What is the bet? 2)How did they choose Henry for their bet?Read the passage again, and answer the questions.To summarize the theme of the play- the bet.6. Pair work: exercise 3. In pairs to describe how Henrys feelings change during the conversation. First f

This is the part that some personal information about Henry. In line 15, Henry answered his name to the brothers twice time. That shows t

35、hat he is being very nervous. The next pair of Ss will read from line 24 to line 46. In this part, Henry told the brothers how he got to London by accident. The teacher will help Ss appreciate the humor of the author in the article. (line 28, when Henry entered the big house, he was so hungry that h

36、e stared at what is left of the brothers dinner on table, while the brothers only focused on their own topic.) (line 36, Henry mentioned he was helpless in London, where was totally new to him as a foreigner. When he said he wanted some help, the brothers just smile at each other.) (line 43, when He

37、nry mentioned he had no money, the brothers behaved happily, even claps hands together. Even they presented unpolitely, Henry still use polite words as “sir”, “If youll excuse me, I think Ill be on my way.”) The last pair of Ss will read the rest part of the passage. The brothers gave Henry the lett

38、er, and the bet just started. (Line 48, the brothers gave Henry the letter as a gift, means they regarded themselves much better than Henry.) (Line 54, Henry showed his dignity. In the procedures, they take part into the reading and especially the acting part actively. Play is a new form of material for Ss to read about, they got very interested

44、 into it. But the step of analyzing the characters by the lines, and the step to appreciate the authors writing features still seem a little difficult for some Ss. I should put more time on those steps and make sure most of my Ss got it. Meanwhile, I put too much attention on the appreciating part,

45、and less on the reading of the text. I should leave more time for Ss to read the text and think deeply before starting to appreciate the play.Using materials:1.
