B My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long ago. It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense. People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and cutting one another off with their carts. Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a mans discount card, but he misread the savings on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting deliberately and began to argue. “She is being spiteful(恶意的) !” he yelled. “This is unbelievable.” Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him. She called a manager, who accompanied him to customer service. Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line. Weve all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. The grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has eroded. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faithstarting with just one person. Back at the grocery store, my wife and I reached our uneasy cashier. I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and handed it to her. “We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you.” I said. Her face lit up, and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week. We wished her well in her recovery, and she thanked us as we left. Those are the balancing acts, the moments of responding social and emotional pain with healing, which will add up to restore trust among people. You can start that pattern in someone elses life, even in a place as ordinary as the neighborhood grocery store. 24. Why did the man at the checkout line argue with the cashier? A. The cashier called a manager to help her. B. Someone jumped the queue waiting to check out. C. There was something wrong with his discount card. D. He believed the cashier charged him more on purpose. 25. The underlined word “eroded” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________. A. changedB. increased C. fadedD. formed 26. A. he thought the cashier might feel a little bit thirsty B. he knew she had gone through much trouble recently C. he wanted to restore the trust between her and the man D. he wanted to comfort her after the terrible experience just now 27. The last paragraph in the passage is intended to ________. A. add a warningB. make a suggestion C. introduce a topicD. present an argument C Most of the thousands of tourists who visit Pompeii every year leave with nothing more than amazing memories. But there are some who take away a little extrathe relics themselves. However, it seems that those visitors who have slipped a piece of the worlds most important archaeological(考古的) site into their pockets have come to regret their actions. Tourists who took relics from the ruined Roman city have been returning them to the site, saying they are cursed(诅咒). One man wrote from Latin America saying that he and his entire family had experienced “trauma after trauma” after he took a piece of stone from Pompeii. Massimo Osanna, a senior official at Pompeii, said he had received up to a hundred packages from across the world in recent years containing items from the site, often accompanied by letters explaining the relics had brought them bad luck. The “curse of Pompeii” is an old story that says the eruption(火山爆发) of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which buried Pompeii, was punishment from the gods after troops ruined the buildings where people showed respect to the gods. “At a certain point, people started believing in this story again,” said Mr. Osanna. “Even proper thieves have returned things to us.” In one case, five packages were sent to Pompeii containing stolen items, including a statue that had disappeared in 1987. The accompanying letter was sent from Spain and the writer explained the statue had brought a “curse on his entire family”. However, some are affected by a strong feeling of dishonor in their heart, rather than an ancient curse. Mr. Osanna said that an English woman had recently returned around 10 mosaic tiles(镶嵌地砖) that her parents had taken while on holiday during the Seventies. “When her mother died, she received these little pieces. But in the letter she described them as uncomfortable and said she wanted to give them back,” he said. Mr. Osanna is considering setting up an exhibition of all the letters he has received, calling it “What I brought back from Pompeii”. 28. Why did some visitors who took relics away regret? A. Because there was nothing but amazing memories. B. Because they took away the relics themselves. C. Because they thought the stolen relics brought them bad luck. D. Because they received letters from a senior official at Pompeii. 29. The underlined word “trauma” probably means “________”. A. an unpleasant and upsetting experience B. an old object or custom that reminds people of the past C. a building where people respect gods D. the things that a person or animal does 30. According to the old story, the gods were angry because________. A. some people cursed them B. the city of Pompeii was buried C. some soldiers didnt show them enough respect D. too many buildings for people were ruined 31. Before returning the mosaic tiles, the English woman must have felt _______. A. ashamedB. scared C. proudD. unconcerned D Radio newsreaders and television hosts at Irelands national broadcaster RTE are very angry at being told to pronounce words according to the Queens English. A report in The Irish Sun newspaper says that RTEs workers have been given an A-Z style guide of words which instructs them on how to pronounce certain words in an effort to make sure they are clearly understood. The A-Z comes with videos containing lessons of how to “properly” pronounce the “problem” words. An official at RTE told the Irish Sun that producers gave the guide to keep up standards. “The guide is there for anyone who needs it.” he said, “RTE often get letters from the public over how certain words were mispronounced. The word issue is a big one at the moment, people dont like how its pronounced. There is an expectation that as the national broadcaster we are correct.” However, Irish linguistics expert Professor Raymond Hickey called the RTEs actions “internalized colonialism(内化殖民主义)”. He expressed his disbelief that Irish speakers were being asked to use words with an English accent. He said: “The basic problem is RTE expects its workers to speak as if they were English. Why? We have our own form of English, which is different but fully reasonable and accepted worldwide.” Professor Hickey specially talked of some examples of the words Irish hosts are being asked to pronounce with a British English accent. He said: “The Irish dont pronounce the TH in birthday as a fricative, but as a stop with no breathThe same is true of newsthe Irish pronunciation is and always has been nooze.” 32. When told to speak the Queens English, RTEs newsreaders and hosts showed great ________. A. angerB. interest C. expectationD. disbelief 33. Why did RTE provide its workers with an A-Z style guide? A. Because some newsreaders and hosts were angry. B. Because the workers expressed the need clearly. C. Because it expected the workers to speak in the British way. D. Because they often make mistakes when reading the letters 34. The official at RTE mentioned the letters from the public ______. A. to make sure the guide is clearly understood B. to explain why RET needed to take actions C. to show how some words are mispronounced D. to show how difficult it is to be a host 35. In Hickeys opinion, the Irish way of the word “news” is ________.
