Lesson 9 Read Billy and Betty Teaching design of PSP Book Four The main topic of this lesson is season. There are three major parts in this lesson, including Lets talk , Lets learn and Read . This class is Part 3 Read . It is the last period of this lesson . It mainly talks about a story between Billy and Betty. After learning this lesson, students can love to read English stories more. According to the New Curriculum Standard and the basic information of the material, I list the following three teaching aims: Knowledge aims 1) Students can master the words and expressions: spring, summer, autumn, winter, warm, hot, cool, cold, busy, sing, dance; 2) Students can use the sentence structures : Spring() is coming. Its warm ( ) He/She likes(). He/She is happy.(). 3) Students can get the meaning of this story. Ability aims 1) Students reading abilities like skimming and scanning can be improved. 2) To foster Ss abilities of communication and their innovation. Affective aims The students can understand that he who will not work shall not eat. Meanwhile, they can enioy the beautiful seasons. The students interests in studying English will be developed. Key Points and Difficulties in this lesson The key points: 1.Students can get the main ideas of the story . 2.Students can talk about their favourite seasons and activities. The difficult points: 1. How to make Ss have good habits of reading and foster the abilities of grasping information in reading activities. 2. How to cultivate students divergent thinking and students abilities to create. Analysis of students Through 1 year of English learning, students in Grade 4 have mastered some basic words. Although it is a little difficult for them to read a story like this one, they have strong curiosity and desire for new things, So, Ill design something interesting to attract their attention to make them learn easily and happily. Teaching methods and Learning methods Task-based language teaching method Situational teaching approach Communicative teaching method Students will finish the tasks by cooperation and competition. And in this lesson, CAI, four typical seasons pictures and two headwears will be needed. Teaching procedures Ill divide it into the following steps, which are: Step 1 Pre-reading Step 2 While-reading Step 3 Post-reading Step 4 Homework Step 1 Pre-reading After a simple greeting, Ill start my lesson with an English song like this: Then students work together to complete the mind-map of seasons through guessing games. Next students will play a rotary table game to review the structure. I like(.). Purpose: It will cost about 10 minutes. It aims to attract students attention to the class and review the knowledge to get ready for reading this story . Step 2 While reading It contains 4 activities. Ill use two headwears to introduce two leading roles, and encourage them to guess what happen. Activity 1 Ill get students to open the book and listen to this story, then answer the questions: 1.Who likes working? 2.Who doesnt like working? Purpose: It can train the Ss abilities of listening and help students feel the whole content. Activity 2 Ill divide the story into three parts. A. Students read the first two paragraphs together and check them true or false. 1. Its warm in spring. ( ) 2. Betty likes spring. ( ) 3. Betty sings and dances in summer. ( ) B. After reading Paragragh Three and Four freely, students complete the article with their parters. Billy likes _. Autumn is coming. Billy is _. He get many _ for the winter. Betty doesnt _ working. She likes _. She sings and_. Purpose: Observing by Ss can develop Ss abilities of scanning. Working with parter can foster Sscooperation. C. Read the last two paragraphs and match the answers. Boys are Billy and girls are Betty. Purpose: Reading with questions in mind can help them grasp more information. Matching game can arouse Ss interest of learning English. Activity 3 Ill guide students read after the tape loudly with emotion. Purpose: The while-reading step will cost about 15 minutes. Students will comprehend the story in detail and their reading abilities will be improved. Step 3 Post-reading In this step, Ill ask students to act the part they enjoy best with the help of the headwears. Ill give them 2 minutes to prepare and invite 3 pairs to come in front to act them with exaggerated facial expressions and body language. Purpose: It will cost about 8 minutes. It aims to stimulate students learning interest and their strong desire for performance. After the performance ,Ill guide students to think and discuss. Why is Betty so cold and sad in winter? What will Betty do next year? This is a brainstorming. Students can talk whatever they think . This part is the most difficult but important . So I will give them some help if necessary, Purpose: It will cost about 5 minutes. It aims to cultivate students divergent thinking and students abilities to create. It also can carry out emotional education. Homework There are three tasks for students. means easy, means normal, means a little difficult. They can choose one from them according to their own abilities. Blackboard design Teaching reflection The whole period is based on tasks which are designed from easy to difficult. When students finished the tasks, they can acquire information, knowledge and have their abilities and skills trained. let students study English in happiness; Let students have no fear in speaking English.
