Unit 6 Fact B gives opinions, but doesnt give any supportive facts; C gives more detailed information (facts and opinion) which help people to form a more convincing and effective opinion. Do you know how to write an effective opinion statement? Lets read the short paragraph. Jackie Robinson is my favorite baseball player. Firstly, he was the first African American to play major league(职业联 盟) baseball and that was a big change for baseball and the United States. Also, he was a skilled athlete who won awards for excellent batting and stolen bases. In addition, Jackie Robinson was a civil rights(公民权 利) leader. Topic: baseball player Look at this sentence. Is it an effective opinion statement? Jackie Robinson is my favorite baseball player. Is it about the topic? Topic: baseball player Could someone disagree or debate with it? How are you going to change it into an effective opinion statement? Jackie Robinson is my favorite baseball player. Step 2 Practise writing an effective opinion statement ( Kammy 8mins) 1.Explain how to write an effective opinion statement Topic: baseball player Jackie Robinson is my favorite baseball player. Could someone disagree/debate with it? If “No”, how are you going to change it? Cross out the words about the writer. Rewrite it. e.g.: -Jackie Robinson is the most important baseball player in American history. 2. Practise writing an effective opinion statement 1 Lets have one more practice. Student read the short paragraph and discuss in a group. Rewrite the statement, make it into an effective opinion statement. Topic: Pet- I want to have a pet in the classroom. e.g.:- In my opinion, having a pet in our classroom is very necessary ! Step 3. Practise giving supportive facts and making the opinion statement more convincing (Kammy 13mins) We have a convincing passage based on this topic and opinion. Lets- 1.Skim the passage How many paragraphs are there?5 Skim the content and structures. How many key parts are there? 3 What are they?Introduction, Body paragraphs, Conclusion 2. Analyze the text structure Draw a mind map based on the text structures to show the connection among the paragraphs? Choose one student to show his/her mind map to show their understanding about the connection among the paragraphs,and give their reasons. Show the teachers mind map. 3. Scan the passage and complete the mind map Read and complete the students mind map with: the opinion, reasons/supportive facts and conclusion. Check the answers as a class. Topic: Having a Pet In my opinion, having a pet in our classroom is very necessary ! Not all students can have 1 pets at home so why not have one at school? By helping to care for the animal, our class will have to cooperate and be responsible. Students can learn a lot from caring for a pet and it is fun! First, having a pet will help us to think more carefully. We should think about the size of the pet. Classroom pets are usually small animals like hamsters, turtles, or fish. We should think about what the pet can eat, and where they should stay, in a tank or cage. We should also consider that some classmates might be allergic to certain animals. Also, a pet will make our classroom more exciting and fun. We will all look forward to seeing the animal each day. You never know what they will do next. Every pets behavior is a little different depending on their personality. The activities during the break time are very limited. When we take a break from our work, we wont just run around in the hallway but have something interesting to observe. In addition, caring for a pet will require cooperation and responsibility. Pets need to be cared for regularly. We will all have to take turns feeding the animal, cleaning its cage or tank, and playing with it. To sum up, a pet will make an exciting addition to our classroom. It will be a fun learning experience for all of us. It will help students look forward to coming to school. We will become more caring. Step 4 Make a mind map for the creative writing (Mari 9mins). T: You have chosen your own topic and found some facts. So, now you are going to make your own mind map for your creative writing.Your mind map should include three parts: Introduction: use the stretagy weve learnt in the class to write an effective opinion statement for your topic. Body paragraphs: to support your opinion by giving different reasons and supportive facts. Conclusion:its the last chance for you to restate your opinion and make it more convincing. (A4 paper, 7mins) Step 5 Choose students to share their mind map (Mari 5 mins). 1 T: Before you present your mind map, lets review some important sentence structures that you can use in your presentation/writing. When we give an opinion, what phrases can we use? When we provide supportive facts/reasons, we dont use Reason 1/2/3, but.(show the PPT) When we give a conclusion, we can say. (PPT) Following up Lesson: We will choose more students to share their mind map and see if they well organize it. Then, do the draft of creative writing. Students can write as a letter, an advertisement or a passage. Show students a checklist of the writing: Do you use the words and phrases we have reviewed in this class? Do you write well-organized paragraphs with Introduction, Body paragraphs and Conclusion? Do you give an effective opinion statement about the topic? Do you provide many related supportive facts?
