Born and raised in Shanghai,Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall painting at Dunhuang,in Northwest Chinas Gansu Province. The 1,651yearold Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a huge collection of Buddhist artmore than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square meters of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is Chinas first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduation from Peking 5 University in 1963.While in Dunhuang,a remote village in the desert then,Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness,Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors. In the late 1990s,with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, but found Fan firmly in their way “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed, ”she said. Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings.“Despite our efforts to minimize damage,we cant completely stop them from being eroded(腐蚀).But the digital database will last.” Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up in Shanghai with their aunt.“I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family,Im full of guilt, ”she said.Fan,79,retired two years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser. 8Which of the following measures didnt Fan Jinshi take to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes? People have long puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks. And theres no obvious answer. On average, each of the two million big stones weighed about as much as a large pickup truck. The Egyptians somehow moved the stone blocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometre away. 7 The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds(滑板). Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may have lubricated the paths either with wet clay or with the fat from cattle.Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand. Evidence from the sand supports this idea.Researchers found small amounts of fat,as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths. However, physicist Joseph West thinks there might have been a simpler way,who led the new study.West said, “I was inspired while watching a television programme showing how sleds might have helped with pyramid construction.I thought, Why dont they just try rolling the things? ”A square could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by attaching wooden poles to its sides,he realised. That,he notes, should make a block of stone“a lot easier to roll than a square” So he tried it. He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. Then they placed the block on the ground. They wrapped one end of a rope around the block and pulled. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery(滑的) path. West hasnt tested his idea on larger blocks, but he thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldnt have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths. 12Its widely believed that the stone blocks were moved to the pyramid site by Arolling them on roads 8 Bpushing them over the sand Csliding them on smooth paths Ddragging them on some poles C细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks along smooth paths.” 13The underlined part“lubricated the paths”in Paragraph 4 means Amade the paths wet Bmade the paths hard Cmade the paths wide Dmade the paths slippery D词义猜测题。 14Why is rolling better than sliding according to West? ABecause more force is needed for sliding. BBecause rolling work can be done by fewer cattle. CBecause sliding on smooth roads is more dangerous. D.Because less preparation on paths is needed for rolling. 根据文章最后一句“At least, workers wouldnt have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.” 15What is the text mainly about? Nowadays, shopping malls are full of highend toys,so the Laoting clay figurines have gradually fallen out of favor. 19 Zhao said that although his children have other jobs to feed their families,he still wants to pass on his skills to them and his grandchildren.“If we do not pass it on,we will do a disservice to our country.Passing on the skills, honoring ourselves and repaying the country is the best option.” Facing a demand for economic development, many regions are increasingly attaching importance to the protection of valuable traditional cultural skills.People come to realise that developing our cultural relics promotes the development of local economies. 20 ABut for him, this is not only an honor.
