In 1982, Peter Gollwitzer, a Professor of Psychology, wrote a whole book about this. And in 2009, he did some new tests that were published. It goes like

21、 this: 163 people across four separate testseveryone wrote down their personal goal. Then half of them announced their commitment(许诺) to this goal to the room, and half didnt. Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work that would directly lead them towards their goal, but they were told that they co

22、uld stop at any time. Now those who kept their mouths shut worked the entire 45 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said they felt they had a long way to go to achieve their goal. But those who had announced it quit after only 33 minutes on average, and when asked afterwards, said that th

An engineer called Rod Rainey thinks he has a way around both problems. He plans to replace the conventional turbines of previous plans with a much older technology. Spe

29、cifically, he plans to span(横跨) the river mouth with a line of water wheels. This is a design that dates back to the early days of the Industrial Revolution. Examples can be found fixed to the sides of old watermills(水磨). But there would be nothing old-fashioned about Mr Raineys wheels. Thirty metre

30、s high and sixty wide, they would be made from ordinary steel. Two hundred and fifty of them, along with the supporting structures, would be floated into place and secured to the seabed, creating a line 15km long. Together, they could supply power at an average rate of 4GW. That is about as much as
