Horse culture is very typical in Britain, ranging from raising horses, training horses, riding horses to horse racing and be

7、tting on horse racing. When it comes to horses in the English culture,we often associate them with the following adjectives: loyal, courageous and gentle. Han Gan (韩干, 618907) , a leading horse painter of the Tang dynasty, was known for portraying not only the physical likeness of a horse but also i

8、ts spirit. Han emphasized the strength and nobility of the horses of the Tang Empire by using a tautly(紧凑的) controlled line and compositions of great clarity(清楚). Night-Shining White（照夜白） is a portrait, and the name of a favourite horse of Emperor Xuanzong (712-756). The painting is 34 cm wide by 30

9、.8 cm high, housed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The fiery(如火般的)-tempered steed(坐骑), with its burning eye, flaring(张开的) nostrils(鼻孔), and dancing hooves, were really dragons in disguise.
