Han Gan (韩干, 618907) , a leading horse painter of the Tang dynasty, was known for portraying not only the physical likeness of a horse but also i
8、ts spirit. Han emphasized the strength and nobility of the horses of the Tang Empire by using a tautly(紧凑的) controlled line and compositions of great clarity(清楚). Night-Shining White(照夜白) is a portrait, and the name of a favourite horse of Emperor Xuanzong (712-756). The painting is 34 cm wide by 30
9、.8 cm high, housed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The fiery(如火般的)-tempered steed(坐骑), with its burning eye, flaring(张开的) nostrils(鼻孔), and dancing hooves, were really dragons in disguise.
