8、hat is Inventory?Inventory refers to stocks of goods that are maintained for a variety of purpose,such as resale to others,lead time,meeting demand,as well as supporting manufacturing or assembling process.Customers demand that their orders be shipped completely,accurately and on time.That means hav

9、ing the right inventory at the right place at the right time.Some major reasons of keeping inventory are as follows:Meet DemandFor example,a retailer must have the products on hand when the customer wants them.If the products are“stock-out”,the customer might get them from other sources.Hence,if a g

10、ood is not in inventory,it results in lost of sale.Keep Operations RunningA manufacturer must have certain purchased items(raw materials,components or subassemblies)in order to manufacture its products.Running out of only one item can prevent a manufacturer from completing the production of its fini

11、shed goods.Lead TimeLead time is the time between placing a purchase order and actually receiving the goods ordered.If a supplier cannot supply the required goods on demand,then the client firm must keep an inventory of the needed goods.The longer the lead time,the larger the quantity of goods the firm must carry in inventory.Quantity DiscountsOften firms are given a price discount when purchasing large quantities of goods.This also frequently results in inventory in excess of what is currently needed to meet demand.
