16、nulledthelongsupportedideathatthesleepisapassivecondition.Inanother,pioneeringpaperfrom1957,NathanielKleitmanandWilliamDementresearchedtheconnectionbetweendreamcontentandrapideyemovements.TheywokeuptheirparticipantsduringtheREMstageandaskedthemtodescribetheirdreams,andthentheytriedtoconnectthoseinte

17、rpretationstothekindofeyemovements(horizontal,verticalormixed).Theoneswhohaveverticaleyemovementsreportedscenessuchasclimbingaladderandstandingatthebottomofacliff.Theparticipantwithhorizontalmovementsdescribedasceneinwhichpeoplewerethrowingtomatoesoneachother,whilethosewithmixedeyemovementsweredream
