versionBecausetheyaresohardtoexplain,theyareliabletosuperstitionsandmanyquestionableinterpretations.Dreambooksarepopulareventoday,andinthem,allsortsofdreamshavebeeninterpretedandattachedtosomemeaningoramessagesincepeopletendtobelievethatdreamsaretransferringsomesignalstous,orshowingusthewayweshouldgo.Scientificstudiesofdreamsarecalledoneirology,andthesestudiesaretryingtofindaconnectionbetweendreamsandbrainfunction.Around60yearsago,sleepresearcherEugeneAserinskywasperforminganovernightsleepstudyonhisson,andheaccidentallynoticedrapideyemovementsduringsleep.Thoseeyemovementswerethenconnectedtohigherbrainactivitywhichannulledthelongsupportedideathatthesleepisapassivecondition.Inanother,pioneeringpaperfrom1957,NathanielKleitmanandWilliamDementresearchedtheconnectionbetweendreamcontentandrapideyemovements.TheywokeuptheirparticipantsduringtheREMstageandaskedthemtodescribetheirdreams,andthentheytriedtoconnectthoseinterpretationstothekindofeyemovements(horizontal,verticalormixed).Theoneswhohaveverticaleyemovementsreportedscenessuchasclimbingaladderandstandingatthebottomofacliff.Theparticipantwithhorizontalmovementsdescribedasceneinwhichpeoplewerethrowingtomatoesoneachother,whilethosewithmixedeyemovementsweredreamingpeoplethatareclosetothem.Afterthispioneeringstudy,evidenceaboutthecorrelationbetweendreamsandREMhavenotbeenconsistent,butonerecentstudyfoundthatthepatientswithREMbehaviordisorderhavecoordinatedeyeandlimbmovementsduringthestageofREM.Complete
