As we know, the fundamental rule of forming a syllable consists of at least a vowel or at least two consonants. Sometimes pupils are not sure where to cut up when they come across longer syllables in a word. So my idea is to give pupils a clue to cut up syllables. It will help to solve the problem more easily if we know all the types of syllables. So today we are going to discuss what the four types of syllables are through phonetic analyses. 2 First lets look at Type One: Complete Syllable. It has one or more consonants +a vowel+ one or more consonants . Lets read the examples. /i:z/ik/ /jes/ /dz/ /va:z/ /bg / / h:s/ /nt/ / u:z/ /luk/ /draun/ /tiz/ /plm/ /bri:z/ /gla:s/ /krb/ /fleim/ /frg/ /slais/ /rais/ /rik/ /ik/ /la:st/ /dst/ /buts/ /b:dz/ 3 Next please look at Type Two: Single Parent Syllable. It has one or more consonants + a vowel or It has a vowel+ one or more consonants. Please read the examples below: /si:/ /tai/ /d i/ /drai/ /flai/ /krai/ /tu/ /trei/ /blu/ /ef/ /el/ /em/ /en/ /es/ /u/ /eks/ /ks/ /i:st/ /egz/ /ik/ 4 After analysing the previous two types of syllable, we can have this conclusion. We take consonants as parents and vowels as children. So now when we can look at Type Three: Orphan Syllable, what can you think of? Yes, this type of syllable has no consonants. Here are some examples. /ei/i:/a:/ai/ /u/ apple /pl/ often /fn/ organ /gn/ orange /rind/ 5 So each type of family unit can reflect in grouping syllable types. So far we have covered the above three types of syllables, The last type ie, Type Four must be The DINK Syllable. It is the opposite to Type Three the Orphan Syllable. It has no vowels. apple /pl/ often /fn/ little /litl/ whistle /wisl/ bible /baibl/ riddle /ridl/ giggle /gigl/ organ /gn/ lesson /lesn/ 6 After illustrating the four kinds of syllables, I believe pupils can cut up and name the following syllables. Now lets try to practice the following examples. Hope you can you tell their syllable types. cinema /si n m/ republic/ri pb lik/ banana/b na: n/ liberation /lib rei n/ university /ju: ni v: s ti/ I /ai/
