、ecting natural wonders. B People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over- the- counter (非处方的) medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies (治疗)like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it. So

、 why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work? According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so its easy to believe its medicine rather than time that deserves the

、 credit, USA Today reported. It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figuring out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的) drugs work. They attack

、the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图), which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3- D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral d

、rug that is effective enough. The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus (鼻病 毒) A and B. But they didnt find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus

、 A and B have little effect when used against C. “This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinovirus,” study leader Professor Ann Palmenberg at University of Wisconsin- Madison, US, told Science Daily. Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C, scientists

、 have finally built a highly- detailed 3- D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses. With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines

、 that dont really work. 4What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold? AThey are quite effective. BThey are slightly helpful. CThey actually have no effect. DThey still need to be improved. 5How do antiviral drugs work? ABy breaking up cold viruses directly. BBy changing the surf

、ace structures of the cold viruses. CBy preventing colds from developing into serious diseases. DBy absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time. 6What can we infer from the passage? AThe surface of cold viruses looks quite similar. BScientists have already found a cure for the common

、cold. CScientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently. DKnowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure. 7What is the best title for this passage? ADrugs against cold viruses BHelpful home remedies CNo current cure for common cold DResearch

、 on cold viruses C Have you seen Jurassic Park? In this film, scientists use DNA kept for tens of millions of years to clone dinosaurs. They find trouble, however, when they realize that the cloned creatures are smarter and more dangerous than expected. Thats nothing more than a fiction. But could w

、e really clone endangered animals? To date, the most successful attempt to do so was the cloning of a gaur, a rare ox- like animal from southeast Asia. Scientists used a cow to bring the cloned baby gaur, named Noah. Two days after birth, however, Noah died from a common bacterial infection. Other e

、ndangered species that may be cloned include the African bongo antelope (羚羊), the Sumatran tiger, the cheetah (猎豹), and the giant panda. Next, could we really clone extinct animals? In theory? Yes. To do this, you need a well- kept source of DNA from the extinct animals such as wool mammoth (毛象), Ta

、smanian tiger, or even dinosaur, and a closely related species, still living, which could serve as a surrogate mother. In reality? Probably not. On the one hand, its not likely that extinct animals DNA could survive undamaged for such a long time. Cloning such extinct animals as wool mammoth, Tasman

、ian tiger, or dinosaur is much more difficult due to the lack of properly well- preserved DNA. On the other hand, for example, a gaur can have a cow as a surrogate mother, definitely not a monkey. But what about an extinct animal as unique as the panda? What species could possibly serve as a surroga

、te mother? Cloning presents many exciting possibilities. However, even if extinct animals were brought back, they could not survive in todays world. Not only do most extinct animals have no habitat to live in, but the other plants and animals they depended on for food may also be gone as well. 8What

、 can be learned from the text? AThe gaur is an extinct species. BThe gaur lives in Asia and is endangered. CScientists have cloned the African bongo antelope. DBoth the cheetah and the giant panda live in Asia. 9 What does the underlined words “a surrogate mother” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? A

、A female who gives birth to a baby of its own. BA female who cannot give birth to a baby. CA female who gives birth to a baby for another female. DA female provides DNA for a baby. 10What difficulty do scientists have with when they clone an extinct species? ABoth the well- preserved DNA and a surro

DBoth the habitat to live in and plants to live on. 11What is possible according to the authors opinion? AAll the extinct species may be cloned. BExtinct species may be cloned

、and easily survive. CA gaur can have a monkey as a surrogate mother. DSome extinct species may be cloned, but not survive. D An international team of researchers from the University of Oxford have found that the way people use the Internet is closely tied to the seasonal movements in the natural wor

That migratory behavior is accompanied by some human behavior. “In Englishlanguage Wikipedia (维基百科), the online searches for migratory specie

、s tend to increase in spring when those birds arrive in the United States,” said the lead author John Mittermeier. And not just birds. Mittermeier and his team surveyed nearly 2.5 billion Wikipedia search records, for 32,000 species, across 245 languages. They also saw variable search rates for inse

This finding suggests new ways to monitor changes in the worlds biological diversity. It also shows new ways to see how much people care about nature, and which

、 species and areas might be the most effective targets for conservation. Mittermeier is encouraged by the search results. He commented, “I think theres a concern among conservationists (生态环境保护者) that people are losing touch with the natural world and that theyre not interacting with native species a

、nymore. And so in that sense, it was really exciting and quite unexpected for me to see peoples Wikipedia interest closely related to changes in nature.” Richard Grenyer, Associate Professor from the University of Oxford, says search data is useful to conservation biologists, “By using these big dat

、a approaches, we can direct our attention towards the difficult questions in modern conservation: which species and areas are changing, and where are the people who care the most and can do the most to help.” 12What have researchers found about species searches? AThey strengthen ties among people. B

、They affect the animal movements. CThey differ in language backgrounds DThey reflect animal migration seasons. 13What is the purpose of writing Paragraph 3? ATo summarize the research process. BTo further support the research findings. CTo show the variety of species searches. DTo present researcher

、s heavy work load. 14How does Mittermeier feel about the search results? ASatisfied with Wikipedias service. BWorried about Wikipedia behavior. CAmazed at peoples care about nature. DSad about peoples not getting close to nature. 15Why does Richard think such search data is useful? AIt helps to aim

、at conservation targets. BIt increases interest in big data approaches. CIt keeps track of trends in biologists work. DIt pushes people to solve difficult problems. Ever
