Of course, there are advantages of working out in the morning. You will increase your energy for the rest of the day. “Morning workouts result in better energy levels throughout the day and give you more mental sharpness, ” says Dr Cedrie Byrant, Chief Science Officer of the American Council on Exercise. Here is another advantage. In 2017, health researchers found that exercising in the morning helps you sleep better at night. According to the study, in all cases, those who exercised at 7:00 am experienced about a 10 percent drop in blood pressure that carried through the rest of the day. They also had about a 25 percent drop in blood pressure at night, slept longer and had more beneficial sleep cycles than when they exercised at other times of the day. However, there are disadvantages, too. If you are not an early riser, getting out of the bed in the morning can be very difficult. Byran says that if youre not used to exercising in the morning and force yourself to get up, you may not put as much effort into the exercise as you would later in the day. Also, if you arent careful, you can damage your sleep schedule, which can lead to insufficient sleep. Besides, hitting the gym before work can cause a challenge in terms of scheduling. If you work a 9to5 job, getting ready for work and going to work can cut your morning workout short, Byrant notes. To sum up, it has both advantages and disadvantages. If it suits you better to work out in the morning, you can do so. 21What did health researchers find about working out in the morning in 2017? AIt made you more tired at night. BIt was good for your sleep at night. CIt increased your blood pressure. DIt led to better mental sharpness. 22What does the underline word “insufficient” in Paragraph 5 means? ANot good. BUncomfortable. CNot enough. DUnbroken. 23According to Paragraph 6, if you do a 9to5 job, your morning workout 5 _. Amay have to suffer Bcan benefit you greatly Cis impossible to carry out Dmakes you manage time better B My First Marathon (马拉松) A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead. I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first PE class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didnt do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic” The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldnt even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running. I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗 标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”. 6 24A month before the marathon, the author _. Awas well trained Bfelt scared Cmade up his mind to run Dlost hope 25How was the authors first marathon? AHe made it. BHe quit halfway. CHe got the first prize. DHe walked to the end. 26What does the story mainly tell us? AA man owes his success to his family support. BA winner is one with a great effort of will. CFailure is the mother of success. DOne is never too old to learn. C The Diet Zone: A Dangerous Place Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, nofat diet, vegetable diet . We are surrounded by the word “diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically. Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, highcalorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zerocalorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we dont have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain_comes_without_pain,_and that life can be without resistance and struggle. 7 The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological harm that comes from using them. 27From Paragraph 1, we learn that _. Adiet products fail to bring out peoples potential Bpeople have difficulty in choosing diet products Cdiet products are misleading people Dpeople are fed up with diet products 28One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _. Atry out a variety of diet foods Bhesitate before they enjoy diet foods Cpay attention to their own eating habits Dwatch their weight rather than their diet 29In Paragraph 3, “gain comes without pain” probably means _. Alosing weight is effortless Bit costs a lot to lose weight Cdiet products bring no pain Ddiet products are free from calories 30Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? 8 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中 有两项为多余选项。 After a long day at work, coming home is a breath of fresh air.
