Type: More reading and writing Students: 40 students in class one grade 5 Duration: 40 minutes Date: 11, 3, 2016 .Teaching ideology: The current theory view reading as a interactive process which involves not only the reading material but also the readers old knowledge of the language. The writing skill is based on the large reading. Teaching reading in the classroom is divided into three stages in which the top-down and bottom-up techniques. The three stages are pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. A short writing practice is after the reading exercise. .Teaching material and learning condition 1. The analysis of teaching material The topic of this unit is school lunch. This dialogue is mainly about Mr. and Mrs. White want to buy some tofu. They are talking and asking the clerk where is tofu, but in the end, there is no more tofu. So finally, they buy some cheese and butter to make some sandwiches. This topic is not new to students, but there is some new words and phrases in the passage. 2. The analysis of learning condition The students are from grade5 in primary school. They have achieved certain English level and they have the ability to get the basic idea of the reading. They are familiar with the topic. Moreover, their vocabulary is limited so they may have difficulties in understanding some sentences. . Learning objectives 1. Language skills (1)At the beginning of the class, the Ss can say the content of the ingredients if Ss can want to make dinner, such as, “If you make dinner with your mom tonight, what do you need? Where can you buy these food?” (2)Ss can skim the passage and get topic content of the passage, for example, Whats the topic of the talking ? (3)Ss can scan the passage and find out the specific information, such as, Where are Mr. and Mrs. White? What do they want? What do they buy in the end? (4)Ss can summarize the passage with the help of the clues of the passage. (5)Ss can write a short dialogue as the following: I am going to cook dinner with mom tonight. Me : What do we have? Mom: We have _. Me: Do we have any _? 2. Language knowledge (1) Ss can master the key words, and sentence structure as followings, tofu, cheese, butter, beside, Do we need? Yes, we do/ No, we dont. 3. Affects (1). Ss can realize what basic ingredients would need when someone cooks, and where can get them. Moreover, they will concern themselves with the issue of helping parents cook. 4. Cultural awareness (1)Ss will broaden their minds by knowing the different ingredients to make to sandwiches, and how to make a sandwich. 5. L e a r n i n g s t r a t e g i e s (1). Ss will cultivate their ability individual learning and cooperative learning by doing some activities independently and some in groups. (2). Ss can summarize the passage with the help from teacher. (3). Ss can get the specific information with the reading strategies. . Language focuses and difficulties 1. This is the reading and writing period, so the focus is to cultivate students reading and writing skill. The many activities are designed to help students to train their predicting, skimming, scanning, and summarizing. 2. As the Ss have limited language, so they may have some difficulties in understanding the passage and writing a new passage. So the teacher will help them learn the new words and phrases. . Teaching method the top-down and bottom-up techniques . Teaching aids Multimedia devices and PPT . Teaching procedures Step1. Warm-up (2 minutes) Activity 1: Sing: what does he need? T: Before our class, lets sing a song “What does he need”, Ok? (Ss sing the song together.) Aims This step aims to attract Ss attention into the lesson. Step2. Pre-reading Activity 1: Free talking T: If you make dinner with your mom tonight, what do you need? Where can you buy the food? (Ss tell the thing in their mind freely) Aims This step, T leads in the topic by talking with the Ss freely about the food Ss may need to cook which is familiar to them. This activity aims to arouse the Ss interests in the topic and activate their old knowledge. Then Ss will be mentally prepared for the reading comprehension. Step3. While-reading Activity 1: Skim the dialogue and get the topic of the dialogue. T: Whats the topic of the dialogue? Please, skim the dialogue quickly and get the topic sentence, and underline it. (Ss skim the dialogue and get the topic.) Aims This activity aims to train Ss skimming skill, and Ss can get the get the general idea of the dialogue. Activity 2: Scan the dialogue again, underline the key words, get the specific information and write down. T: There are 3 questions, who can read these questions for us? (1) Where are Mr. and Mrs. White? (2) What do they want? (3) What do they buy? (One student reads the 3qustions, and then, Ss scan and underline the key words or sentences and write down the answers. And then check the answer one by one.) Aims This activity aims to train Ss scanning skill, to practice the ability of getting specific information. Activity 3: Ss listen, underline the hard words in the dialogue, and help Ss underline some key hard words. T: Listen carefully, and underline any hard words in the dialogue, please. (Ss listen, and try to underline some hard words.) T: Mr. and Mrs. White want to buy some tofu, but there is no more tofu. So they buy some cheese and butter in the end. Look at the picture please, which one is cheese? Which one is butter? Which one is tofu? (Ss tell which picture is cheese, which one is butter, which one is tofu.) T: Is there any hard words in the dialogue? (S1 points to the word “beside”, and then, T shows a picture that tells the meaning of beside. ) Aims This step aims to help Ss understand some hard words meaning. Activity 4: Ss listen, read, answer, and watch to learn how to make a sandwich. T: Listen, and read the dialogue together, please. (Ss listen, and read the dialogue together.) T: Mr. and Mrs. White buy some cheese and butter to make some sandwiches. Are these food enough to make sandwiches? Ss: Not enough. T: So, can you tell me what else do they need to make sandwiches? (Ss tell the food freely.) T: Different people have different ideas. Now, lets watch video “how to make a sandwich” Aims Let Ss listen and read this dialogue, Ss can be more familiar with the passage. Moreover, Ss can imitate the native English intonation. Ask Ss what else food Mr. and Mrs. White to make sandwiches. This aims to arouse Ss old knowledge and life experience. Let Ss watch how to make a sandwich. Ss can have a relax, at the same time learn a making sandwich skill. This may attract Ss attention. Step4. Post-reading Activity 1: Ss try to retell the dialogue in groups with the help of the clues.
