B Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on Oct 8 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901. Gluck was honored for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with simple beauty, makes individual existence universal. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, “Gluck is not to be regarded as a confessional( 忏 悔 ) poet. She seeks the universal,” Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement. Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss and isolation( 孤 独 ). Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is direct and . also a voice full of humor,” he said. For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “cool wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Glucks poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time. Although shes already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing( 愈 合 ), Gluck did feel honored to be given the famed Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the lyric poet responded by saying, “Its too new I dont know really what it means.” Her only hope is that she can preserve her daily life. 24.What do we know about Louise Gluck? A.She had her first collection published in 1993. B.Her poems are based on life experiences. C.The Wild Iris won her the Nobel Prize. D.She is a successful confessional poet. 25.What does Olsson think of Glucks poems? A.They are too dark for readers. B.They focus on individual existence. C.They are frank and humorous in style. D.They are mainly about human personality. 26.Why does the author mention Snowdrops in Paragraph 4? A.To show the features of Glucks poetry. B.To introduce the main plots of this poem. C.To describe Glucks creativity in choosing themes. D.To explain Glucks purpose in writing Snowdrops. 27.How does Gluck feel about winning the Nobel Prize? A.She is not qualified for the prize. B.She cant believe she got the prize. C.It makes a difference as expected. D.It may disturb her daily life. C Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic global Internet traffic has become a big problem. Between January and late March. many major cities experienced an increase in Internet traffic. Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a daily routine. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet s strength. In March. major phone networks in the UK experienced mass outages(断供). People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data. In the US, major telecommunications companies like AT theyre everywhere. The concerns have grown with the screens. In the past decade, we have heard that they will damage our mental health. Many of us feel more distracted by them, feeling guiltier and more tired as a result. The apps and websites we can access on our phones have also sparked widespread concern. Big tech companies are also good at making use of our need for social recognition, hooking us on likes, retweets and follower counts. Social media has created a culture of mass narcissism (自恋), which has led many to worry about the emotional stresses on teenagers. A quick online search brings up dozens of papers linking screen use or social media with harmful effects on mental health, including depression and suicide. Such statements are alarming. They are also widely believed, thanks to popular books like iGen by Jean Twenge, which claims that digital technology has ruined a generation. Yet, Amy Orben at the University of Oxford, who studies the impact of digital technology and social media in particular on mental health, holds different views. She claims that the underlying data can be used to tell different stories. She also spotted shortcomings in several large studies that claimed to show correlations (相关性) between the use of devices with screens and depression in users. Twenge stands by her own finding pointing in turn to what she considers flaws in Orbens research methods. For David Max, at Royal College of Child Health in London, the effect of screen time and social media use on mental health remains speculative. “We cannot regard social media overall as good or bad,” says Davie. “We dont know whether in individual cases social media is not responsible,” he says. The explosion of mobile phone use has revolutionized our lives. I can download movies, write articles, communicate with my family and broadcast to the world all at the push of a button. Rather than impose constraints (限制), we should take a look at our use of screens and ask how they fit with the activities and lifestyle. Every new technology with widespread impact has given rise to new fears. So the best bet may simply be to ask yourself what level of screen use makes you and those around you happy and try to stick to it. If you find yourself over addictive, dont panicand certainly dont feel guilty. Nobody knows anything worth getting scared about. 32. According to the passage, people give likes, retweet or count followers to _. A. share ones lifestyles B. show respect for others C. seek social recognitionD. relieve emotional stresses 33. The underlined word “speculative” probably means “_”. A. DoubtfulB. specificC. importantD. abstract 34. What can be learned from the passage? A. Teenagers are more affected by screen use both physically and mentally. B. Orben claims it is far too early to blame screen use for ruining a generation. C. Big tech companies help to produce many research papers on mental health. D. Twenge mainly introduces the overall benefits of digital technology in her books. 35. The passage is written to _. A. encourage readers to reduce the time of screen use B. share different opinions on the effects of screen use C. explain why screen use may have negative effects on people D. relieve peoples concerns and worries about the use of screens 第二节第二节 (共(共5小题,每小题小题,每小题2.5分,满分分,满分12.5分)分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 If you are thinking about taking an English course and you are not sure whether to learn English online or not, you should think about these three things: the place, time and your way of learning. Traditional classroom learning is more suitable for people who like physical activities or play games. _38_ They can write and draw on them. Online classrooms might be more attractive to visual and audio learners who like to interact with the pictures and photos, music and videos that can be shared during their lesson. _39_ All in all, whether you are considering taking an English course on the Internet or at a language academy, don t forget the most important part: your English lessons should suit your schedule and learning style. _40_ A.
