about?Thinking Thinking Thinking Thinking First impressionsFirst impressionsFirst impressionsFirst impressionsWhat do you think the travel journal talks about according to the title and the illustrations? The travel journal might talk about the thoughts people have when they look at one of an artists works for the first time.It gives a different impression every time one looks at it.The title“First impressions”,together with the pictures, also reminds me of the Impressionist painters and their unique techniques. The travel journal could mention how they used the techniques, what effects they created,as well as the reasons why artists used them. Why do people visit art museums?People visit art museums to appreciate the artists spectacular masterpieces and to be inspired by creativity. They instil a sense of awe that someone created something so beautiful or unique.Visiting art museums is also one way to learn about cultures, beliefs and traditions.Art museums let us see a countrys history through its art. They are the pride of a country because they showcase its creative intelligence.Skimming Skimming Skimming Skimming Para.1Para.2-4Para.5-6Introducing a trip to Paris Discussion Discussion Discussion Which of the following do you think is most likely to be an Impressionist painting?Give your reasons.I think the painting in the middle is most likely an Impressionist painting because it is probably a normal everyday scene for the painter. The boat and its surrounding scene are just an impression of what the painter saw so they are not painted in clear detail the soft edges of the boats, factory chimneys, sea and sky seem to mix together. This tells me that the painter used the Impressionist free brushwork technique. The painter also used light and vivid colours to express his or her feelings. If you were a tour guide of the Muse dOrsay, how would you introduce the museum to the visitors? The Muse dOrsay is a world-famous art museum in Paris,France. It is unusual because it was previously used as a railway station. This museum is famous for its large collection of paintings from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements of the 19th century. It also displays masterpieces from masters such as Claude Monet,Pierre-Auguste Renoir,Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.A visit to the Muse dOrsay allows visitors to look at and compare the different styles between the two art movements. They can enjoy looking at the world from an entirely new point of view.Vincent van Gogh was one of the most gifted artists of his generation. He began working in an art(1)_ when he was 16 years old. However,it was not until more than a(2)_ later that he started to seriously consider being an artist himself.Van Gogh became depressed after he moved to London. In 1880,he took up painting, from which he drew much comfort. As he began to(3)_ a talent for painting,he realized that art was his true calling. He was very impressed by the artworks of the master painter Rembrandt when he(4)_ them.In 1886,he moved to Paris to live with his brother, who introduced him to some Impressionist artists.Task B1Task B1Task B1Task B1gallerydecadedisplaylaid eyes onHe began to Impressionism. He made friends with Paul Gauguin, who shared the same(8)_,and they became known as Post-Impressionists.Although he was a genius,Van Gogh was not yet appreciated in the art world. He only sold one painting during his lifetime, but these days, his works are enjoyed by people around the world.employingvividas opposed tovisionSuppose two exhibitions are to be held, one for the works by the Impressionists and the other for the works by the Post-Impressionists.Which one would you choose to see? Why?I prefer to see the works by the Post-Impressionists for two reasons.Firstly,I am familiar with quite a few works by the Impressionists and have already acquired some knowledge about their painting styles. Therefore,I am eager to know how they influenced the Post-Impressionists.What did the Post-Impressionists focus on?How did the Post-Impressionists employ brushwork and colours? These questions often haunt me.Secondly,Vincent van Gogh is my favourite painter and he belonged to the Post-Impressionists,so I want to learn more about him and to see his works with my own eyes.Thinking and discussionThinking and discussionThinking and discussionThinking and discussion
