The Mogao Caves (莫高窟), also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes (千佛洞), form a system of 492 temples 25km (16 mi) southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis(绿洲) strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China. Mogao Caves is a group of ancient caves which were built in different dynasties. It is famous for exquisite(精美的)murals(壁画 )and various sculptures(建筑) kept inside the caves. With 735 caves, more than 45,000 square meters of murals, 2415 colored sculptures of different size. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art(佛教艺术) spanning a period of 1,000 years. How did researchers protect this cultural heritage? Lets read a news report to find the answer. Over the years he has taken thousands of pictures of old buildings to create a record for his fellow citizens in the present and future. Another important part of his project are the interviews he conducts with elderly residents. Often these stories help to bring the interesting histories of the buildings to life, giving them their place in the human stories of Wuhans citizens.
