Unit 1 Lights, camera, action! To know the strategies and tips of dubbing; To dub an English film scene in groups; To evaluate and comment on each others work. Voice-over VS Dubbing Voice-over and dubbing are both techniques for interpreting a message to a new audience. However, while voice-over is narrative by nature and lacks the emotion and tonality of the original audio, dubbing is much more precise as it maintains the tonal, emotive, and technical richness of the original soundtrack. Differences between voice-over and dubbing. Strategies and tips of dubbing Dubbing is an audio recording of the translated video script that the viewers listen in their own language. It replaces the original audio. Therefore, the translation requires exact synchronization of the audio to the visuals on the screen. Here are a few tips to an effectual dubbing: 1. Be the apt voice. 2. Keep it original. 3. Synchronize with lip movements. Strategies and tips of voice-over Voice-over/VO is mostly narrative in nature. It is frequently utilized for shorter segments of content such as news-related segments, advertisement or documentaries. For an effective voice over, one must understand the material and pre-read it so that you dont get stuck in between and waste your time. For an effective voice-over, here are a few tips: 1. Relax and dont rush your words. 2. Place the microphone in the right position. 3. Dont strain your voice; keep it healthy. As a class, discuss some film scenes that you like. Use the ideas below to help you. Then in groups, choose a film scene you are going to dub. 1. Consider the following ideas. (Part A on Page 13) One person can play more than one character. The lines should be clearly spoken and not too difficult. The characters speak more or less the same amounts. Two or three minutes. Preparation 2. Recommend some film scenes. 3. Each group decide a film scene to dub. Find the video clip, watch it and practice dubbing. 1. Go over the excerpt of Forrest Gump and watch its video clip, paying attention to the lines spoken by different characters and the intonations. Implementation Voice acting Speak clearly and try to stay in time with the character speaking in the film. Use your body language to get into character and help the feelings come naturally. Even though only your voice will be heard, you need to act with your whole body. 2. Focus on the tip of “Voice acting” in part B on page 13 and try dubbing the excerpt in Extended reading. 3. Make the dubbing go smoothly in groups and practice before presenting your work to the class. 5. Present the work to the whole class in groups. 6. Listen in groups and watch carefully and provide your suggestions for improvement. 1.
