My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing school exchange year in Hungary. Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an allyear program, I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was buy a plane ticket. I knew where I wanted to go: Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary, I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it, since it was, after all, a onceinalifetime opportunity. Before I knew it, I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, Hungary. I had difficult times when I almost gave up. Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet. Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me. I had to give up eating carrots, my beautiful favorite, for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to. Gradually, I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warmhearted people, and getting home at 2:30 pm at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day. Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing Ive ever experienced. From my little sisters, I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that its OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive, to smile and that when you pick the right people and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends. 21Why did Jonathan still decide to go to Hungary instead of Spain? AHe didnt like Spain. BHe wanted to learn Hungarian. CIt was a rare chance. DGoing to hungary was much cheaper. 22What can we learn about Jonathan during his stay in Hungary? AHe fell in love with eating carrots. BHe couldnt wait to leave. CHe was surprised by the landscape. 5 DHe quickly got used to the life there. 23According to Jonathan, the host family _. Achanged him completely Btaught him how to dance well Ctreated him as equally as a student Dshowed him the good things of life B As the world around them is changing, teenagers continue to need guidance and support from both parents. Studies show that teens who have an active relationship with their fathers are less likely to involve (牵涉) themselves in dangerous behaviors and more likely to succeed in school and develop higher selfworth, because their fathers go beyond social expectations to devote attention to them. Peer (同龄人) pressure has always been a big part of the teens experience. Even the best father cant completely protect their kids from the growing influence of their peer group. However, studies show that teenagers whose fathers focus on their lives are more likely to resist (抵抗) the more bad effects of peer pressure, taking drugs, for example. Teens may not like to admit it, but they are watching their parents closely and often follow their example. An interesting finding explains just how important parents are, especially Dad. Swiss researchers discovered that if Dad attends church, even though Mom doesnt, 44 percent of the kids are still more likely to keep going to church as adults. But if Mom goes regularly and Dad never shows up, only 2 percent of the kids continue to attend. Teenagers face a lot of difficult choices, especially in their later teens. Fathers dont get to make those choices for them, but they can be influenced. For example, teenagers can learn a lot from their parents concern on what to do when they finish high school. Should they go directly to college and, if so, where? Should they consider going to trade schools, joining the army or looking for a job? A fathers guidance brings a longterm perspective that teens often lack to these important decisions. 24Teenagers without fathers focus are more likely to _. Ahave higher selfworth 6 Bexperience some dangerous things Cbecome the best students in school Dresist all bad effects of peer pressure 25What does the third paragraph tell us? AMore teenagers pay no attention to their parents. BTeenagers often treat their fathers as role models. CTeenagers never attend church with their mothers. DFewer teenagers like to attend church with their fathers. 26What can we learn from the text? AFathers should make choices for teenagers directly. BTeenagers care less about what their parents do. CMothers have no effect on their childrens life. DTeenagers are greatly influenced by their fathers. C Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published Monday. While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many childrens lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading. According to the reports key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they hardly ever read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13yearolds and 9 percent of 17yearolds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.” The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 28, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session. When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel (建议) parents looking for data about the effect of ereaders and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time. The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. 7 Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read. As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom (逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore. 27What is the Common Sense Media report probably about? AChildrens reading habits. BQuality of childrens books. CChildrens afterclass activities. DParentchild relationships. 28Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun”? AIn Paragraph 2. BIn Paragraph 3. CIn Paragraph 4. DIn Paragraph 5. 29Why do many parents limit electronic reading? AEbooks are of poor quality. BIt could be a waste of time. CIt may harm childrens health. DEreaders are expensive. 30How should parents encourage their children to read more? AAct as role models for them. BAsk them to write book reports. CSet up reading groups for them. DTalk with their reading class teachers. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中 有两项为多余选项。 Freshmen anywhere may be nervous about university life. Written work at college level cannot be done at the last minute or in a rush. It takes time. Turn to your teachers. If they will read draft essays then make sure you can get feedback (反馈) ahead of the final submission. _35_ Students who get feedback on their work always do better than those who do not. It is one of the few educational laws that holds true in all cases. ADont try to do it all the night before. BHowever, a lecture is a listening workout. CThinking clearly cannot be done in a rush.
