If you can recite the text and write it out, youve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says, youre a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, youll find it not half so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on your way to success in English. Equally important is to feel_the_language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at bad news. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation. 21In the writers opinion, the most effective way in learning English is _. Ato practise speaking, writing and feeling it Bto forget your own native language Cto translate everything into his own language Dto memorize the English words and grammatical rules 22The habit that you always refer to your own language when learning English _. Ahelp you to study English well Bstop you mastering English Cmake English easy to learn Dhelp you notice mistakes 23What does the underlined phrase “feel the language” in the last paragraph mean? ATo get a knowledge of English by touching. 5 BTo be able to read and write English. CTo translate English into your own by imagining. DTo be able to experience the rich sensation of the language. B Learning any language is hard, but learning English can be especially challenging. Why? Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbooks could never describe. In particular, words that British people use cause many language students to scratch their heads. Heres an example: You overhear a Briton calling someone a “wazzock”. But what exactly is a wazzock? This word, in fact, means a foolish person, although theres nothing about it that would help you guess that. There are many strange terms like this in British Englishthe Oxford English Dictionary would be much smaller without these peculiar (古怪的) usages filling its pages. How can these odd words be explained? Part of the answer is the British sense of humor. Britons dont like to take things too seriously, and this is evident through many British words and phrases. For example, to “spend a penny” means to use the bathroom. It refers to the days when people had to pay a penny to use a public toilet. In an interview for the BBCs website, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be historical reasons for the sheer number of odd words and phrases in British English. He thinks that they began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This was a great age for the theater, when Shakespeare and other writers worked hard to keep up with the demand for new plays. The theaters popularity also created an incentive (刺激) to invent new words. With this in mind, perhaps Shakespeare and his peers are to blame for unusual British words such as “codswallop” and “balderdash”which both, ironically, mean “nonsense” While these strange words may be confusing to nonnative speakers, they certainly make studying English a lot more interesting. 24According to the text, why may nonnative speakers find it hard to learn English? ADictionaries dont explain odd usages of many words. BA great many strange words make no sense to them. 6 CThe English textbooks they study are usually out of date. DThey are unable to understand the humor in conversations. 25With the example of “spend a penny”, the author intends to _. Aexplain one reason of how some strange phrases were created Bexplain the meaning and background of the phrase Cshow what typical British sense of humor is Dshow British peoples attitude toward strange words 26According to David Crystal, _. Amany of the words that Shakespeare invented were nonsense BShakespeares works are boring because of the odd words involved Cthe theatres success in the 17th century inspired the birth of many odd words Dthe odd words in Shakespeares plays contributed a lot to the theatres popularity C If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Havent you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the better the effect is. A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience 7 of learning a second language, ” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible, ” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.” The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world, ” explained the scientists. 27The last sentence of the second paragraph is intended to _. Asay language learning is also a kind of physical labor Bprove that one needs more practice when he (she) is learning a language Cshow the importance of using it when you learn a language Dmake people believe a second language learning do good to your brain power 28The underlined word “bilinguals” probably means “_” Aresearchers on language learning Bpeople who are good at learning foreign languages Cpeople who can speak two languages Dactive language learners 29We may know from the scientific findings that _. Athe earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is Bthere is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesnt know a second language Cthe experience of learning a second language has bad effect on peoples brain Dthe ability of learning a second language is changing all the time 30The main subject talked about in this passage is _. There are three main conversation techniques that parents can use to help their preschoolers develop important oral language skills. _32_. The more details that are added in a conversation, the more opportunities the young child has to learn new words. Listen closely to what the child is talking about, and then explain it further to help a preschooler expand language. Interact by asking questions and telling answers that are meaningful to the childs interests. _33_. It also gives preschoolers opportunities to use the new words. By asking different types of questions like who, where, why, what, how and when, young children are encouraged to use their own words and express their own ideas. Help young children learn to use their language to consider and solve a problem. By “wondering aloud”, an adult models his thinking process and exposes preschoolers to curiosity and the abstract uses of language. “Wondering aloud” is simply saying out loud what you are thinking. _34_, you can involve your children in what you are doing and demonstrate how to think through a problem to come to a conclusion.
