They argue that posting graffiti in public places is considered an illegal act of property damage. But the location of such graffiti should not prevent the images themselves from being considered real art.I would argue that graffiti is the most important public art form. Spray paint is a medium unlike any other. Through graffiti, the entire world has become a canvas (画布). These works of art dotting the urban landscape are available, free of charge, to everyone who passes by.To be clear, I do not consider random words or names sprayed on stop signs to be art. Plenty of graffiti is just vandalism, pure and simple. However, there is also graffiti that is breathtaking in its complex detail, its realism, or its creativity. It takes great talent to create such involved designs with spray paint. Are these creators not artists just because they use a can of spray paint instead of a paintbrush? To declare that all graffiti is vandalism, and nothing more, is a too simplistic statement. Furthermore, graffiti is not going anywhere, so we might as well find a way to live with it and enjoy its benefits. One choice could be to make a percentage of public space open to graffiti artists. By doing this, the public might feel like part owners of these works of art, rather than just the victims of a crime.11. Mark Turin apparently believes that graffiti _.A. is not an art formB. is too simple to be considered artC. can only sometimes be considered a work of artD. should be restricted to places where it is allowed12.The author argues that graffiti _.A. is the only art form that is freeB. is best viewed on public walls rather than a canvas C. provides more public benefits than sculptures do D. should be judged on artistic qualities rather than places13. The author concludes his passage by _.A. restating his positionB. questioning the magazine C. offering an answer to the matter D. identifying the benefits of graffitiBResearchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies 3have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.”Smell, which decides the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect (察觉,发现) up to 10, 000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1, 000 genes, which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate (调节,控制) smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors (感受器).14. C., or Redwood, Calif., you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding its own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker. The robots, which look like electric rice cookers with wheels, were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focused on delivering meals from local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world. This week, the company revealed plans to broaden its delivery service beyond food to include packages, a move that made it “the worlds first robot package delivery service”. The package delivery service is only available in some cities in the US.The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect barriers from as far as 30 feet away.“The robot can operate through just about anything, ”says Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starships D. C. office, “If you have something in the way, its able to climb it.” By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is promoting its service as a way to combat package theft. To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the companys app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address”, a unique address inside a Starship facility, instead of a home address, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon. com.Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text notice that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot. The robots are opened by customers with a mobile phone code (代码).17. What do we know about Starship Technologies company?A. Packages are delivered by its robots all round America.B.
