Thirteen hundred tons of fuel oil were flowing right in the middle of the African Penguins habitat. Soon the oil covered about 20,000 penguins. Without swift help, the seabirds would have no chance of survival. Volunteers were showing up by the thousands and I also took part in what was the largest animal rescue operation ever. A warehouse was turned into a rescue center near the habitat and hundreds of pools were built to hold about 100 oiled birds each. When walking into the center, I couldnt believe my ears. I had expected to walk into a chorus of honking and squawking(尖声叫). Instead, the center sounded like a library. The penguins were dead silent. My heart ached for the painful birds. Cleaning them all seemed like an impossible task. But we had to carry on like doctors in an emergency room. There was no time for doubt. Cleaning oil off a penguin wasnt easy. Even with more than 12,500 volunteers, it took a month to bathe all 20,000 birds at the center. While volunteers were busy bathing the oiled penguins, another crisis(危机) was developing. Oil from the spill had started moving north. Tens of thousands of penguins were in the oils path. But we already had our hands full with 20,000 recovering birds. If any more birds were oiled, we wouldnt have enough resources to save them. One researcher came up with an idea: What if the penguins were temporarily moved out of harms way? Experts decided to have a try. Volunteers rounded up the penguins and released them 500 miles away. The hope was that by the time the seabirds swam home, the oil would be gone. The plan worked! Another 20,000 penguins were saved. The entire penguin rescue took about three months. More than 90% of the oiled penguins were successfully returned to the wild. Looking back on the rescue, I am still amazed by the work of the volunteers. What I could hardly believe was that we accomplished an impossible task.1. The African penguins were in danger because of _.A. a knock by a shipB. a change of habitatsC. a spill of oilD. a lack of help2. When walking into the rescue center, the author felt _.A. ambitiousB. shockedC. hopelessD. inspired3. The crisis was ended by _.A. moving the penguins from homeB. cleaning the polluted habitatC. asking more volunteers to helpD. stopping the flow of the oil4. The author mainly intends to tell us that _.A. we should unite to make the earth pollution-freeB. where there is a will there is a wayC. the future of wildlife is in our handsD. many hands make great workBWhen man and nature try to co-exist, man usually wins out. But that wasnt the case in a small town in southern India when a native Robin recently chose to build her nest in an extremely inconvenient location. The village of Potthakudi contains only 120 homes and has a total of 35 streetlights. Unfortunately the misguided mama bird had decided to set up housekeeping in the towns main lighting switchboard (配电板).The nest and its inhabitants were first discovered by Karuppu Raja, the man tasked with turning on the streetlights each evening. A lifelong bird lover, Raja posted his find to local social media to warn the citizens of his discovery and ask for their cooperation in taking a hands-off approach to the unexpected guests.“Switching off the lights is the only solution because the bird will fly once it realizes there is a human touch or contact near its nest ” Raja wrote on WhatsApp. “We should save the bird and its babies at any cost.”While some initially voiced concerns that lack of nighttime illumination (照明) would be inconvenient ,Raja was eventually able to persuade his fellow villagers that any sacrifice would be worth it in the long run. “I explained that so many birds have died out and we should not let Indian Robin go the same way,” Raja recalled. So, rather than ousted the bird, the villagers agreed to observe a blackout (断电) until the baby birds were old enough to fly away. The town spent a total of 45 days and nights in the dark, even disconnecting the switchboard from the power source to keep the mom and her chicks safe. After mama Robin and her babies finally took off, the blackout was lifted, but the villages extraordinary protection efforts for the sake of one lone bird and her babies didnt go unnoticed.A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush but a bird in the switchboard has earned Potthakudi a reputation for kindness thats likely to light up smiles for quite some time to come.5.
