The 34-year-old man is already preparing for his climb of Mount Qomolangma in four months time.Overcoming the worlds tallest mountain takes careful preparation, even for an experienced mountaineer like Baijal. But right now the extent of the dangerous challenge is not what concerns Baijal.I love Mount Qomolangmafor its beauty, mystery, and mood, Baijal said. But I am sad to know that it is becoming the worlds highest rubbish dump. Baijals deep respect for the worlds most famous mountain is not shared by everyone who climbs it.As the numbers of commercial climbers and adventure holiday enthusiasts visiting the peak quickly increaseabout 800 people reached the Himalayan summit in 2018so too has the amount of rubbish left behind. The landscape of snow and ice is littered with tents, empty oxygen tanks, climbing equipment, food containers, and human waste left by the nearly 5,000 mountaineers who have followed in the footsteps of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first people to reach the summit in 1953.Dawa Steven Sherpa, who has led more than 150 climbers from 18 different countries to the summit, says he was so alarmed by the piles of rubbish that he decided to lead the first annual ecological expeditions to Qomolangma, with the one and only purpose of collecting rubbish from the mountain. The Nepalese government is pushing people who run tour businesses like Dawa to cut down on waste with a deposit system. Mountain expeditions now have to leave a deposit of around 4,420 euros, and they cannot get the money back until a government official confirms their expedition is clean. Dawa pays about 0.77 euros for each kilo of rubbish brought down from the mountainside to encourage climbers to follow the law.Removing waste from such high mountains is very difficult, too. The oxygen is only about 30 percent so to bring down the rubbish is a big challenge. Dawa says he will continue the difficult and dangerous work. As long as Im in the mountains, said Dawa, I will keep cleaning the mountains.1. What was Baijals main concern?A. He has not prepared carefully enough.B. Too much rubbish on Mount Qomolangma.C. The number of visitors to Mount Qomolangma has increased in recent years.D. Five thousand people climbed Mount Qomolangma in 2018 and 800 of them succeeded.3. What is the purpose of the annual expeditions to Qomolangma led by Dawa?A. To warn climbers about safety issues.B. To collect rubbish left by climbers from the mountain.C. To lead climbers from different countries to the summit.D. To reward those who take rubbish back from the mountain.4. What law has been put into practice by the Nepalese government?A. The extra money will be given to people who bring down their waste.B. The number of tour companies will be decreased by the government.C. Expeditions cannot get their deposit back unless they bring back their rubbish.D. Tourism companies must give the government money for cleaning up the rubbish.5. What is the passage mainly about?A. As regulations on garbage classification have been implemented in several regions, where and how to dispose of garbage appropriately are among the top concerns for people. Many people are in favour of the regulations and call for national implementation. Others, however, have been complaining about the strict and complicated classification system.Personally, I believe regulations on garbage classification should be encouraged because it will benefit human beings in the long term. Garbage classification can reduce the size of landfills and pollution. It can also turn waste into wealth. For example, waste metal can be re-melted and refined. Furthermore, some garbage contains heavy metals and toxic substances, so inappropriate disposal of it can easily harm public health and even cause diseases. Garbage classification can prevent the inappropriate disposal of garbage from happening. In conclusion, garbage classification needs to be advocated and carried out throughout our country. Only in this way can we develop a sustainable environment and create better living conditions for ourselves.
