That has been consistent from its start on Bellaires east side to its current location, said Kira Carroll, whose mother and father, Adelaida and Homero Capetillo, have co-run the repair shop since 1995. Its a passion that we all have, Carroll said. The idea for the shop did not come until after 1986 when Homero graduated from Houston Technical College with a diploma in horology, the study of time and making timepieces. He also earned a certification in 1985 from the Omega SA watch company and would later become a member of the American Watchmakers Institute.Homero heard about an opportunity from a member of his familys church. He had just been laid off by Brown & Root Industrial Services, where he worked as a mechanic. Then he worked at a local watch shop for several years before deciding on becoming an independent horologist (钟表师).Since then, the shop has focused on providing consistent quality. Also, there are other products, such as jewellery. The owners had considered getting out of the clock repair business because of the time and effort but decided against it because of customer demand. We get people to come here through word of mouth because we provide good service, Carroll said. The shop has adapted in other areas, such as with remodels in 2001 from Tropical Storm Allison flooding and a break-in a few years ago.Homeros son, Homer Capetillo , is slated to take over in the future. He is also a horologist who graduated with a certification from Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Education Program in 2014. He was the first in the family to attain that professional distinction. The aim is to keep the shop family-run because of its importance to the Capetillos. You dont just wake up one day and decide, Oh I want to be a horologist, Carroll said.21. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Homero has been working as a horologist since graduation.B. The shop provides other products besides clock repair service.C. Mr. C Watch & Clock Repair has been a family business since 1985.D. The shop has had the same service and location since it was founded.22. What does the underlined word slated in the last paragraph mean?A. Planned.B. Required.C. Resistant.D. Hesitated.23. What does Carroll mean in the last paragraph?A. He decided to be a horologist when he woke up one day.B. It takes perseverance and determination to be a horologist.C. He wants to encourage more young people to become horologists.D. People need to think about it deeply before deciding to be a horologist.二、选择题。阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的二、选择题。阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。四个选项中选出最佳选项。Peacekeeping has proven to be one of the most effective tools available to the UN to assist host countries to navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. Peacekeeping has unique strengths, including legitimacy, burden sharing, and an ability to deploy (部署) and sustain troops and police from around the globe, integrating them with civilian peacekeepers to advance multidimensional mandates (指令).UN peacekeepers provide security and the political and peacebuilding support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace. UN peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles: agreement of the parties, fairness, and non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate. It is flexible and over the past two decades has been deployed in many frameworks.Todays multidimensional peacekeeping operations are called upon not only to maintain peace and security, but also to facilitate the political process, protect civilians, assist in the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants, support the organisation of elections, protect and promote human rights and assist in restoring the rule of law.Peacekeeping has always been highly dynamic and has evolved in the face of new challenges. Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon established a 17-member High-level Independent Panel on UN Peace Operations to make a comprehensive assessment of the state of UN peace operations today, and the emerging needs of the future. As a unique global partnership, UN Peacekeeping brings together the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Secretariat, troop and police contributors, and the host governments in a combined effort to maintain international peace and security. Its strength lies in the legitimacy of the UN Charter and in the wide range of contributing countries that participate and provide precious resources. Success is never guaranteed because UN Peacekeeping almost by definition goes to the most physically and politically difficult environments. However, over 60 years of existence, UN Peacekeeping has built up a demonstrable record of success, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize.24. What is true about UN peacekeepers using force?A. They are not allowed to use force.B. They may use force when their security is threatened.C. They can use force to help the weaker of the warring sides.D. They should use force when host countries have difficulties maintaining peace.25. Which of the following is the duty of UN peacekeeping?A. Disarming former combatants.B. Helping restore the rule of law.C. Maintaining the political process.D. Sending and managing troops for host countries.26. What is the purpose of the underlined part in the last paragraph?A. To indicate that UN Peacekeeping has a long way to go.B. To make people aware of the importance of UN Peacekeeping.C. To explain that UN Peacekeeping efforts are not always effective.D. To stress the tough working conditions of UN Peacekeeping missions.27. What is the best title for this passage?A. UN Peacekeeping: Its History and OperationsB. This innovation can be used to monitor heart function in detail and it could further be developed to detect minute physical vibrations.Spiders hear each other and their environments through hairs on their bodies and through crack-shaped slits (狭缝) on their legs. These hairs and slit organs pick up tiny vibrations in the air, which help them detect movement helping them find prey or a potential mate, for example. This complex biological phenomenon was described by Peter Fratzl from Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and Friedrich Barth from the University of Vienna. Based on their findings, the South Korean researchers created a mechanical version of the organ. To test the sensors performance, the researchers placed it on a violin. As a result, the sensor could distinguish between the different notes being played. It correctly recorded the harmonic frequency of each note in the piece. Another experiment was to stick the sensor on the necks of 10 people and ask them to say the words go, jump, shoot and stop commands in a video game more than 10 times into a microphone. Then they compared the microphones recording to the sensors recording. When the researchers played background noise at the same time, the microphones spectrogram (声谱图) signals got really noisy, but the sensor remained accurate. Moreover, it could read out a subjects pulse if strapped to their wrist.Korean researchers said the sensor is able to fit the sensor sensitivity for different applications by varying the density of cracks made in platinum (铂) film. For example, a sensor for measuring the heart rate does not need to be as sensitive as a version used for voice recognition. The system could also be adapted to create more efficient earthquake detection systems. The researchers are also working to reduce the manufacturing cost by replacing platinum, the primary material for making the sensor, with copper or aluminium (铝). 28. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 refer to?A. Movement can cause tiny vibrations in the air.B. Spiders can find prey or a potential mate easily.C. Spiders can hear the environments through their crack-shaped slits.D. Spiders have hairs on their bodies and crack-shaped slits on their legs.29. What have the South Korean scientists tested in their experiments?A. How the sensor pronounces words.B. How the sensor can record words and noise separately.C. Whether the sensor can follow the commands in the video game.D. Whether the sensor can distinguish between the different notes played by a violin.30. What will the future research possibly focus on?A. The sensors reaction to different densities of sounds.B. The efficiency of the sensor in detecting earthquakes.C. New manufacturing materials that are more cost-friendly.D. Developing more types of sensors using copper or aluminium.31. In which section of the newspaper can readers find the passage?A. Health.B. Science.C. Business.D. Education.四、选择题。阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的四、选择题。阅读下面的短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。四个选项中选出最佳选项。Who cares if people think wrongly that the Internet has had more important influences than the washing machine?
