Professional writer Laura Fanuc wrote the poem to cheer herself up. To her surprise, it went popular online. Thats the old news. The new news is that the poem has become an education assignment for a humanities class in the South Bronx. It has inspired about 80 sixth graders to write their own version (版本).The students are enrolled in the American Dream School, a charter school for English language learners and immigrant students. Teachers Daniel Zauderer and Niki DeGiorgio introduced their class to the poem, assigning them to study it with the aim of cultivating gratitude through poetry. These students stay at home with laptop computers, through which they connect with their classmates and teachers.Fanucs poem is basically a list of everyday activities she cant do because of social distancing, and that shall never take for granted again. It ends with an inspirational message of hope that we all will rise from this ordeal (磨难) to be better people. The teachers challenged the students to brainstorm what they had taken for granted and what they hope people will learn, and to express themselves in a poem of their own. The class followed Fanuc is format (格式), reworking the poem. The students showed some love for DeGiorgio and Zauderer in their version of the poem, with the line: “Seeing my teachers face to face.”“Working remotely during this pandemic is tough some days,” DeGiorgio said in a Face book post. “What brings me hope and joy is the beautiful hearts, minds and words of my students.”24What do we know about the poem?AIt was written by Homer.BIt was published in the newspaper.CMany students were inspired by the poem.DThe poem was translated into several languages.25Why did the two teachers introduce their students to the poem?AThe poem can develop students appreciation of poetry.BThe poem can make students feel grateful.CThe poem is easy for students to learn.DThe poem expresses a feeling of warmth.26What does Laura Fanuc mainly write about in the poem?AHer daily life.BThe necessity of social distancing.CDaily activities that she cant do now.DSome difficulties she met before.27How did the teachers feel when seeing the students version of the poem?ATouched.BPessimistic.CThankful.DDepressed.CLeek Town Warriors was a girls football team Which used to get routinely defeated every time they turned out, until James Henry stepped in two years ago. He took the job when the previous coach quit and transformed the teams fortunes. With the help of his assistant Andy Austin, they started training hard in April 2020.Some players had never kicked a football before joining the team, so training them took hours of hard work and patience. After a good few weeks, they got down to training and really started to take it in what the coach wanted. “I insist on doing the basic stuff well and letting the girls decide what they feel they need to work on.” James said.James first season was ruined by the pandemic, which forced him and Andy to get creative with training. They organized team-building activities with the girls to help them bond on and off the field. James then spent the sessions they could hold focusing on the basics of football like passing and shooting, bringing the girls up to a good standard.James watched the girls develop over the course of last year, and in September they played their first match of the new season. They won the game, and since then went on an unbeaten run of eight games. The teams star player, 15-year-old Chelsea, has also impressed the audience individually, becoming the top scorer in the league with incredible 30 goals.James said, “All the effort that the girls, us coaches and parents have put in to get this point has been enormous. If I hadnt had the Support of Andy helping me every week, this would have been an impossible task. So Im incredibly grateful to have him on side. All we want is to bring more girls into the game and show that its not all about having the best players; its about hard work and giving everyone the chance to play.”28Why did James Henry take over the soccer team?ABecause he wanted to try his fortune.BBecause he wanted to turn things around.CBecause the previous coach recommended him.DBecause he hoped to fulfill his champion dream.29What did James do to change the situation?APick experienced players.BDevelop players patience.CLay stress on basic skills.DMake decisions for the girls.30What did the team achieve after James was in charge?AThey won the league championship.BThey stood out in James first season.CThey scored 30 goals in the season.DThey won regularly and secured promotion.31What can we learn from the story?ATalent is the key.BJoint efforts matter.CEvery dog has his day.DTime and tide wait for no man.DIt has always been assumed that traffic noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer too.Scientists have previously suspected that plants may be able to sense sound waves as they are struck by them. A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent yearsplants continuously affected by ultrasound(超声波) in the lab have shown a range of adverse responses including the expression of stress-related genes, abnormal growth and reduced sprouting(发芽) of seeds.Yet blasting(轰击) plants with ultrasound is not the same as growing them in the presence of actual traffic noise. To this end, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi decided to set up an experiment to study precisely this question.Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Rayandi grew two species in his lab. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels(分贝) of traffic noise for16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.None of the plants exposed to the traffic noise did well. Analysis of their leaves revealed that all of them were suffering. The chemical compounds indicating stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the samples exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that a range of hormones normally associated with healthy growth and development in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise. His findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the impact generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to trigger strong stress responses. The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way.32What does the underlined word “adverse” mean in the second paragraph?Aexpected.Bpassive.Cnegative.Dopposite.33What can we know about the plants exposed to traffic noise?ATheir seeds failed to sprout.BThey have high-level hormones.CThey contain more stress-related compounds.DThey barely have expanded leaves.34It is possible that the next step of the study is to _.Areduce noise pollutionBexperiment with other plantsCpublish the findingsDconfirm previous assumptions35Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?ANoise Pollution Has to Be ReducedBPlant Protection Is Urgently NeededCPlant Growth Is Prevented by UltrasoundDPlants Are Badly Affected by Traffic第二节(共第二节(共 5 小题;每小题小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分分,满分 12.5 分)分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Make Your Application (申请表申请表) Stand OutColleges and universities in the US receive thousands of applications every year from within the US and from countries all around the world. _36_ How can you make yourself more memorable among these students?Realize that “recommended” equals “required”. The very first thing any applicant to a college should realize is that it is a competitive process._37_ In fact, certain parts may even be presented that way in university application materialsbut the reality is that anything that the university presents as “optional” or “recommended” is usually seen as “required” in the minds of admission officers. Dont hesitate to send in extra material. While it used to be the case that universities would make it very clear that they would not accept extra materials, that is no longer true in most cases, and in many cases, universities will accept all kinds of materials. _38_ but it could make the difference when you are on the borderline. _39_During school breaks, make sure that you are doing something that shows your academic curiosity, your initiative, and your willingness to work hard. Bonus points if your activity produces something that could be easily understood by admission offices, and if, this activity is something youve been doing for two or more years. Be eager and focus on quality communication. _40_ Answer emails without delay; send thank-you letters; and ask good and thoughtful questions. Language that might be OK when messaging your friends is certainly not the right tone when communicating with admission officers. It is likely that all of your emails go into your admission file, so you will make sure that all of it will be able to stand close examination by the admission committee.AOne might think of many parts of the application as optional.BYou are expected to present yourself thoroughly in the process.CUse your extra time wisely.DCommunicating well will generally be to your benefit.EBut how can you make yours stand out from the pile?FMake sure the language you use is formal and careful.GExtra materials wont suddenly make you competitive.第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分
