BIt took me a moment to realize what had happened. Three days had passed and Rita seemed to get weaker and weaker. The rain had stopped. However, the sky was still cloudy, and it was so dark that I couldnt see the buildings even across the road. I took a pressure reading from the weather station: 947mb, which let me know exactly where I was-in the eye of the storm. There were rains and winds still, but not pooressive (难以忍受的) anymore. There was still no power, hot water or food. Besides, I didnt sleep well for all these days, but I felt more relaxed since the weather report said Rita was leaving. Whats more, I was luckier than those people who had lost their homes or even worse, lost their lives because of Rita. As I traveled further to the west, going after the storm, the damage along the way became less severe. I arrived in Houston after a tricky journey with my fuel supplies almost all gone. However, I came across another storm chaser who had 45 gallons of petrol. He helped me and we shared our working experience these days. With a complete stroke of luck I found a run-down hotel that allowed me to have a room overnight before the midnight. Although there was no running water, no power or no air conditioning, I curled up int a corner and fell asleep quickly. I woke up the next morning, and what a change! The sky was blue and cars were moving around. Sirens could be heard as convoys (护航队)of emergency managements started to head west towards where I had come from, “The storm had stopped and I could go home. I gave all my remaining supplies to other people at the hotel and headed towards the airport. Houston airport was not damaged, so I took my flight and drank my first hot drink in front days. ”All in all, when I came back home, I was proud that finally I made it again to follow and record the storm and I really learned a lot these days. Although its dangerous, I love my job as not many people would go into the eye of an intense storm. 4. Damages caused by the storm in Houston. CClothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shoppers. But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated this question and concluded that its not as sustainable as it seems. Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented-receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing. She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from physical store and washed and worn at home is 33. 4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levis. ”Then theres the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when its returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene, an air pollutant that causes cancers, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these arent great, either. Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because its so easily accessible. Theres something called “share washing” that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership. ” and yet “it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation. ”Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldnt let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. Theres an even better step-thats wearing what is already in the closet. 8. What is Elizabeth Clines attitude toward clothing rental?A. Approving. B. Objective. C. Unfavorable. D. Enthusiastic. 9. The Uber example in paragraph 6 indicates that _?A. rental services are on the riseB. clothing rental will be as successful as UberC. renting clothes might waste more than expectedD. renting clothes might make people lose interest in fast fashion10. The author suggests that we should _.A. give up renting any clothingB. purchase inexpensive clothesC. rent clothes rather than buy themD. make full use of clothes weve possessed11. What is the passage mainly about?A. Clothing rental is a new fashion. B. Clothing rental is retailers preference. C. Renting clothes is not that eco-friendly. D. Renting-clothes business is in a dilemma. DEarthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake. This robot, looking like a helicopter, is called the detector bot. At about 4 meters long, it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air, and deliver goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake. This robot is equipped with a high 360-degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area. Dr Qi Juntong, from Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesnt need distant control. We just set the information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3, 000 meters, and as fast as 100 kilometers per hour. ”This robot has a different function-it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers cant go. The robot is equipped with a camera that can work in the dark, as well as a detector that not only finds people, but can also detect poisonous gas. Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-metre-long pipe. People trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids. Experts have said that the robots will be produced, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year. 12.
