2、 an English novelist,the eldest of the three Bront sisters whose novels are English literature standards.Under the pen name Currer Bell,she wrote Jane Eyre.vCharlotte was born in Thornton,Yorkshire in 1816,the third of six children,to Patrick Bront,an Irish Anglican clergyman,and his wife,Maria ne B

3、ranwell.vIn April 1821,the family moved a few miles to Haworth,where Patrick had been appointed Perpetual Curate(教区牧师).Mrs Bront died of cancer on 15 September 1821,leaving five daughters and a son to be taken care of by her sister Elizabeth Branwell.In August 1824,Charlotte was sent with three of h

4、er sisters,Emily,Maria and Elizabeth,to the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire(which she would describe as Lowood School in Jane Eyre).vIts poor conditions,Charlotte maintained,permanently affected her health and physical development and hastened the deaths of her two elder sister

5、s,Maria(born 1814)and Elizabeth(born 1815),who died of tuberculosis in June 1825 soon after their father removed them from the school on 1 June.vIn 1854,when she married her fathers curate(助理牧师),the Rev.Arthur Bell Niahols,her health was already poor.After a few months of marriage a cold which she c

13、ls in the inhuman world.vCharlotte Bronte considers herself a follower of Thackeray,so she dedicates“Jane Eyre”to him and in the preface to that novel speaks of her indebtedness(受恩惠).On the other hand,she is under the influence of Dickens also,in the melodramatic(戏剧似的)effects in her stories and in t

14、he deeply moving scenes where she shows her sincere feelings for the victims of the unjust society.Her FeaturesuWithout a doubt,Charlotte Bront was progressive in her beliefs and took an early interest in politics.In a time when women were considered little more than social adornments and bearers of

15、 offspring,Charlotte Bront bravely contradicted society through her writing.uMarriage was always a viable solution,yet Charlotte Bront would only marry a man she respected,no matter what status or fortune the man had.Her InfluenceBront reminded her readers,or rather enlightened them to the fact that women of self-respect and intellect could seek their place in the world,without the assistance of men.In her subtlety,she wrote simple women,who relied upon the respect of themselves,rather than society,to provide fulfillment in their lives.Thank You
