1、A Rose for EmilyWilliam Faulkner Born in 1870 in New Albany,Mississippi.Grew up listening to the stories of American South.Wrote stories in adolescence.Won Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.Died in 1962.Famous as a novelist and short story writer.Best known works include The Sound and the Fury,As I

2、 Lay Dying,and short stories “A Rose for Emily.”Known for his experimental style in fiction.This story begins with Emilys death,which attracts all the men and women in the town.The story then shifts into the past and tells the story of Emilys life.Colonel Sartoris,the mayor of Jefferson at the time,

3、remits Emilys taxes.Quite some years later,when a new generation of politicians tries to get Emily to pay her taxes,she refuses.The narrator also tells other pieces of Emilys life.For example,in the summer after her fathers death,Emily is attracted to Homer,a foreman from the North.The townspeople a

4、nd Emilys relatives talk about it and do not approve of their relationship.The narrator mentions,among other things,that Emily buys some arsenic,but refuses to explain why.It is only discovered at the death of Emily,when the townspeople find a mans skeleton in her bed.Its strongly implies that this
