5、rally considered preferable compared to poster presentations,for quite a lot of people feel that oral presentations are more prestigious and offer more cache than poster presentations.Oral presentations are generally short talks or panel discussions delivered by one or more individuals to a room of
6、interested meeting attendees.Depending on the conference,the speaker(s)may read a prepared speech or the speaker may more informally discuss his/her work using visual aids,such as a PowerPoint presentation using a laptop computer.A very brief time is allotted for individual oral presentations,typica

9、s,the conference organizers invite the experts in a specific area to share their recent work.Its common that the contributed presentations are of shorter duration than the invited talks,but generally there are no substantive differences otherwise.“Contributed”simply means that you,as a conferee,subm
10、itted your paper for consideration of presentation as versus“invited”,which means the conference invites you to speak.In fact,invited speakers must also submit their proposals or abstracts for the conference.9 Individual presentationsAs for the benefits the invited speakers receive,that depends on t
11、he specific meetings and the meeting organizers.At some conferences,invited speakers may be offered free or reduced registration,lodging,travel,etc.However,there are cases that the invited speaker may come with none of these perks.Therefore if you are“invited”someday,dont make assumptions for the be
12、nefits.It would be clever to go to ask the conference organizers what services,if any,the conference will provide to you.Quite frequently,simply being invited to the conference is considered a significant honor to the researchers.10Generally the contributed presenters have prepared their conference

17、cussion.Unless absolutely necessary for the topic,avoid PowerPoint presentations and slides,for they tend to slow down the discussion,keep audience involvement low and often bore the audiences.Use a small number of slides only when information or diagrams need to be presented that cannot easily be e
18、xplained in words alone.131.2 Poster presentationsPoster presentations are valuable opportunities for a large number of conference attendees to present their work in the form of visual poster presentation.141.2 Poster presentationsPoster presenters are usually provided a significant amount of space(
19、3 4 or more)on which to fully display their research in a visually attractive and professional way.The poster presenters generally have the opportunity to share their research work over an extended period of time,lasting an hour or more,even a whole day at some conferences!This allows the poster pre
20、senters to describe and discuss their research in greater detail than would be possible in an oral presentation to those who are genuinely interested in their research.Also the poster presenters can receive valuable feedback from the attendees on the spot.151.3 ColloquiumColloquium(pl.colloquiums or
21、 colloquia),from Latin,meaning“to talk”,is an academic conference or meeting,where people tend to talk.161.3 ColloquiumThe specialists there deliver addresses on a topic or on related topics and then answer questions relating to them.This type of conference session often lasts around 90 minutes and
22、entails 5 or more presenters who are proposing papers on the same topic or the same theme.All presenters will speak;each approximately 15 minutes and there will be additional time for discussion and questions.These sessions have a more narrow focus and therefore attract attendees with a genuine inte
23、rest in the topic.171.4 SymposiumA symposium is a type of conference or session that focuses on one particular topic.It is often a collection of papers from a number of contributors.Each contributor will have an opportunity to present and a time for discussion.This type of session is valuable when m
