porch. But when Mr Matthews lost his sight,Corina started reading to him, although his choice of novels was a little advanced for the little child. She still had trouble with most of the sentences, but the older man encouraged her to continue practicing, hoping she would be the most educated and well-read girl in her class.Corina usually searched Mr Matthews vast bookshelf for books. One day she grabbed one with a colorful green cover.Surprisingly, this copy featured some illustrations, making her eyes widen in delight. But something was hidden between the pages. It was a photo of a little boy.Upon closer inspection,Corina realized she looked exactly like the boy in the picture. She turned it over and saw the words,“My best son,Jeremy.”Corina realized that it seemed familiar to one her dad kept on his bedside table. So she took it and raised it to Mr Matthews face, completely forgetting that he was blind and asking,“I found a picture in the pages of one of the books. It says,My best son,Jeremy.Who is this?”“Oh,thats my son.Like the picture says,”Mr Matthews frowned(皱眉)and took a deep breath.“I was not a good father.I became successful and money blinded me.And I left my wife and son to pursue.other inconsequential matters.By the time I realized my mistake,it was too late. They were gone from our hometown and I lost contact with them.”The little girl thought about it thoroughly and quickly realized she didnt care about his past. She smiled because she had been spending time with her grandfather for many years without knowing it.“So,youre my grandpa?”she said.“I probably inherited(遗传)my love of books from you!”The older man laughed and relaxed once again until the girl said something.“You have to come to the house tonight.Tell Dad.Tell him.Dad is awesome.Hell forgive you,and then we can spend more time as a family!”Mr Matthews was too afraid to reconcile(使和好)with his son after so many years, but Corina convinced him and brought him back to the family.24.Why did ache? What dog of bag food will we get?In case youve wondered what causes such speech errors or slips of the tongue, you might like to know that all speakersof all ages and abilitiesmake them sometimes.Even people who use a sign language produce what some call“slips of the hand”.One way to think about speech errors is in terms of the linguistic units that each involves. The“Yew Nork”slip shows a sound exchange.Notice that each of the consonants(辅音)is first in its own syllable. The“dog of bag food”slip shows a word exchange.Notice that both words are nouns.Vowel sounds can also switch places,as when a speaker who meant“feed the pooch”said“food the peach”.The“stummy”slip blends the synonyms(同义词)“stomach”and“tummy”.Phrases can also blend.Another way to think about speech errors is in terms of what influences them.Someone who meant to refer to fingers said instead,“Dont burn your toes.”The words“toe”and“finger”dont sound alike, but they name similar body parts. In other words, semantic(语义的)connections can influence speech errors. The speaker here was trying to get the word“finger”from the body-part section of his mental dictionary and slipped over to its semantic neighbor“toe”.Linguistics professors distinguish slips by the linguistic units that they involve, such as consonants, vowels, words and phrases. They describe how and when speakers use such information. This can help us understand how language develops in children and how it breaks down in people whose minds or bodies are partly damaged. The study of speech errors reminds us that small problems happen now and then in every complex behavior. When you walk, you sometimes catch your foot on something and fall. When you talk, you sometimes slip.Dont be discouraged.28.What can we infer from the first paragraph?A.Language abilities are increasing with ages.B.Sufferings of traveling abroad are worthwhile.C.Slips of the tongue are common in communication.D.Native speakers are likely to make speech errors.29.How do the second and third paragraphs develop?A.By giving data.B.By analyzing causes.C.By drawing conclusions.D.By making comparisons.30.Why do the linguistics professors use the linguistic units?A.To deliver more information in speeches.B.To describe something unpleasant in detail.C.To understand the development of language.D.To recognize the differences among speech errors.31.What is the authors attitude towards speech errors?A.Tolerant.B.Conservative.C.Critical.D.Indifferent.DPicky eaters can be a challenge, especially when their selective eating habits lead to nutritional deficiencies and social discomfort.Researchers at the University of Portsmouth have found that picky eaters perceive food eaten out of red bowls to be saltier and less desirable than the same food served in white bowls. These findings contribute to our understanding of how taste perception can be influenced by the color of plates and cutlery.Picky eating can evolve into a serious disorder, with clinical definitions often including those who consume only about 20 different kinds of foods.A 2018 study estimated that nearly one in five American adults could be clinically categorized as picky eaters. Therefore, finding ways to help them engage with more types of foods could lead to valuable health outcomes. The new research focused on the effect of plate color on food desirability for picky eaters. The experiment had participants rate the sweetness, saltiness, and overall desirability of a snack food eaten from different-colored bowls.About 50 participants were elected and classified as either picky or non-picky eaters based on a standard questionnaire. The results revealed that picky eaters perceived the snack to be saltier when eaten from a red or blue bowl compared to a white bowl.Picky eaters also found the snack generally less desirable when eaten from a red bowl.Interestingly, the effects of bowl color on food taste and desirability were only apparent in the picky eater group, while non-picky eaters were relatively uninfluenced by bowl color. This finding suggests that plate colors may be most influential on food taste for picky eaters.Other studies have also shown that the influence of plate shape and color on food is complex.A 2013 study found that white round plates tended to enhance basic judgments about food, while black square plates could enhance perceptions of quality or liking.According to Lorenzo Stafford, one of the authors of the latest study, these findings could be useful in helping picky eaters accept a wider variety of foods. He suggests that serving bitter vegetables on a plate or bowl known to increase sweetness might encourage picky eaters to try them.32.Why does the author mention the 2018 study in paragraph 2?A.To highlight the importance of plate color in taste perception.B.To emphasize the universality of picky eating among adults.C.To provide an example of a previous study with contrasting findings.D.To introduce the research methods used in the University of Portsmouths study.33.What can we know about the 2013 study?A.Plate color does not affect food perception.B.Black square plates make food taste worse.C.Plate shape has no influence on food perception.D.White round plates help people better understand the food.34.Which of the following is a possible application of the research findings?A.Serving bitter vegetables on a plate known to increase sweetness.B.Using different plate colors to create a visually appealing meal.C.Avoiding the use of colored plates for picky eaters.D.Encouraging people to only use white plates.35.What can be the best title for the text?A.Color has a psychological impact on food choicesB.Strategies for overcoming picky eating in childrenC.The science of taste perception and food preferencesD.Using certain colored plates improves taste of food for picky eaters第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 home, stand on their own two feet and be self-sufficient?36 Of course, flying the nest to go to university is the opportunity of a lifetime, but to make the most of it needs some preparation before you arrive.37 Youll no longer be able to rely on Mum and Dad to feed you or clear up after you,so try to learn how to make some dishes that are quick and easy to prepare.Graduate Peter Rogers said,“I didnt really have anything other than basic cookery skills before I went to university and found learning to cook was reasonably enjoyable.”Other things to do while at home is to practice some of those household chores, like operating the washing machine or ironing your clothes!38 Thats because students will probably be living with others such as in a flat share or shared campus-based accommodation. This will also require taking responsibility for managing their finances because, apart from tuition fees, accommodation is likely to be the biggest cost for students living away from home. However, the Higher Education Policy Institute and Unite Students study found only about half of the would-be students surveyed identified rent as the biggest expense and concluded that this suggests more should be done to help in the transition between school and university.39 They not just rely on old friends at home.Going to university requires meeting new people and making new friends. This often begins in Freshers Week although journalism student Emmeke Megannety warns that:“People starting university nee
