The verb-ed form is passive in meaning. Task 2 Task 3 Observe the following sentences and think about what meaning

10、 the verb-ed phrases express. 1. Asked why he was against cloning humans, the scientist explained that it might lead to disaster. 2. Shocked by the article, the woman wrote a letter to the newspaper. 3. Heated, the metal will expand. 1. The verb-ed phrase “ Asked why” expresses “time”. It can be cha

11、nged into an adverbial clause, “When he was asked why he was against cloning humans”. 2. The verb-ed phrase “ Shocked by” expresses “reason”. It can be changed into an adverbial clause. “Because she was shocked by the article”. 3. The verb-ed phrase “ Heated ” expresses “condition”. It can be change

Task 4 Rewrite the following sentences using past participles as the adverbial and think about what are the differences between the original sentences and the rewritten ones. 1. Henry was highly interested in music and began to write original com

13、positions when he was in high school. 2. They were pleased with his music and songs and finally invited him to perform in the Silver Hall. 3. Though he was affected by gradual blindness soon after the performance, Henry was still capable of writing compositions and he found that creating music was a

14、 relief and cure for his illness. 4. When he got absorbed in his world of music, he felt as if he could “see” the beauty of the world around him, like he had in his previous life. 1.
