1Module 9 PopulationUnit 3 Language in UseI. Analysis of teaching materialThe task of this module is about having a class discussion about population. The topic of unit 1 is about population increase in China and the students use different sentence patterns to talk about problems of population increase. Unit 2 is about changes happened between the countryside and the city. It also focus on reasons, problems and advice about population increase. Thus, this writing lesson is to review Module 9 and to talk about reasons, problems and suggestions for population increase, especially in big cities. II. Teaching typeWriting III. Teaching aims1. Knowledge aims: (1) Students will be able to use these words: noise, pollution, rubbish, haze , convenient, etc. (2) Students will be able to use these phrases: keep quiet in public, hunt for jobs, natural environment, etc. (3) Students will be able to use different sentence patterns to give advice such as its a good idea to do sth, youd better do sth, etc. 2. Ability aims: (1) Students will be able to develop their critical and independent thinking. They can hold on their own opinions and argue for them. (2) Students will be able to develop their collaboration skills and communication skills when they talk about problems and advice. (3) Students will be able to use some writing strategies to give some suggestions for population increase in big cities. 3. Emotional aims: 2(1) Students can understand the importance of natural environment and know how to protect it. (2) Students can respect the differences between the city and the countryside. But they can also find the balance between them. IV. Teaching key pointsTo help students analyse reasons, problems and advice of population increase. V. The teacher introduces her hometown by inviting students to enjoy two videos which are about the city and the countryside. (I came from the countryside but I moved to the city many years ago.)Step 2 Reasons of population increase 1. Students work in groups and have a debate about “What C do you choose? The City or the Countryside?”2. The teacher introduces the rule of the debate: Groups which choose green cards support the countryside; Groups which choose yellow cards choose the city; Every group states reasons of the choice. 3. Presentation of groups and evaluation of the teacher. Firstly, students grasp the reasons of population increase and learn expressions: hunt for jobs, better public services, convenient traffic, better natural environment, etc. Secondly, students understand that we should consider things from two sides, both advantages and 3disadvantages. 4. Complete this part of writing by learning the first strategy “Use more conjunctions.”Step 3 Problems of population increase1. BrainstormStudents think about the problems of population increase and review phrases, such as too much traffic, not enough public services, etc. 2. EvaluationStudents enjoy four sentences and make an evaluation. Students understand the second writing strategy, which is “Make sentences and words different.”.3. Write this part of writing. Step 4 Advice on population increase1. DiscussionStudents discuss in groups about what can people do to solve problems. 2. Write this part of wring from two aspects, citizens and the government. Students also learn how to use transitional words or sentences. Step 5 Post-writing and Homework1. SummaryThe structure of the writing: Reasons , problems and advice.2. AssessmentStudents make an assessment about their own composition. This assessment is taken by themselves and groups.3. Thinking(1) The teacher asks the question “What will our city become if we take actions ?” and shows pictures to show that if we take actions to solve problems in cities, cities will be as beautiful as the countryside. (2) Students make the choice again “Which C do you choose after problems solved?”. The teacher shares the idea with students : If we make efforts, we can choose both/ either. 4.
