Jan Zabinski was a zoologist and zoo technician by profession, and he was also the organiser and director of the famous Warsaw Zoo before and during World War II.The zoo was running well right up until World War II when the German army occupied Poland in 1939. Many cages in the zoo that used to keep animals had been emptied during the September 1939 air attack on Warsaw, and Zabinski decided to use them as hiding places for Jews. Over the course of three years, hundreds of Jews were able to temporarily hide in these abandoned animal cells, until they were able to relocate to stable places elsewhere. In addition, close to a dozen Jews were hidden in Zabinskis two-story private home on the zoos grounds.In this dangerous job, he was helped by his wife, Antonina and their young son, Ryszard, who looked after the needs of the many Jews in their care.Those hiding inside the house could move around as they pleased.
