Ben, a college freshman who did volunteer fundraising work, calls it “a win-win situation.” Giving back to your community is valuable in itself, but helping others also offers many benefits. Gain valuable life experiences and skills. Whether you build houses for the homeless or mail flyers for a local group, you can experience the real world through hands-on work. And you can explore your major or career interests at the same time. For example, as a premed (医学预科的) freshman, Gregory spent his summer volunteering at a local health clinic. He picked a clinic in an area with a lot of Spanish speakers so he could practice his language skills while observing medical workers. He also found time to ask the doctors questions.FURTHER EXPLORATIONMeet interesting people. Both the people you are helping and your fellow volunteers can give you new insights. No matter what groups of people youre working with, youll find that they have information and ways of looking at the world that can broaden your horizons. Make a difference. Rhea, a college student, still remembers a visit she made to a senior home with a choir when she was in middle school. “An elderly man in a wheelchair looked up at me after we sang Frosty the Snowman and said in a low voice, Youve made my day. This means so much,” she recalls. “Id never been thanked in such a way for doing something so small, and by a stranger no less!”From: bigfuture.collegeboard.orgHave you ever participated in any volunteering activity or community service project? Now, Hollis, 17, has raised more than $530,000 for the hospital through her program, Juggling for Jude, and has her sights set on getting other kids involved. “I dont want to stop. I want to keep doing it so that kids with cancer can be saved, and we can raise more money for St. Jude,” Hollis said.Hollis, who loves soccer and is pretty good at juggling, began raising money through donations for each juggle she completed before the soccer ball hit the ground. Ill keep juggling and speaking until kids no longer get cancer, and I hope more people will support Juggling for Jude as I move forward with my mission. Next stop: $1 million!” said Hollis.Although Hollis had no personal connection with St. Jude when she began fundraising for the hospital, she has since become friends with a St. Jude patient. The two met through Juggling for Jude. “She is a survivor and an inspiration to me,” Hollis said. “Every time I visit her I almost want to cry because what her family has been through is unbelievable, and to see that they are all still smiling is incredible.”学科网(北京)股份有限公司学科网(北京)股份有限公司学科网(北京)股份有限公司Hollis said she is motivated to help St. Jude because families never receive a bill from the hospital for treatment, travel, housing or food. “They treat kids with cancer free of charge, and they are working extremely hard to find a cure for cancer. It is just an amazing hospital.” Hollis also said kids of any age can support a cause close to their hearts. “You just have to set your mind to something, be really into your cause, have a parent back you up, and you can start something amazing and change the world.”学科网(北京)股份有限公司学科网(北京)股份有限公司学科网(北京)股份有限公司
