10、or Formula One race cars,solar cars do not represent a practical means of transportation.They have limited seating(usually one,sometimes two people),they have very little cargo capacity,and they can only be driven during the day.They do,however,offer an excellent opportunity to develop future techno

11、logies that can be applied to practical applications.Solar vehicles representing five college teams left Cal State-Sacramento on Tuesday morning at the start of a six-day,670-mile race to Los Angeles.They reached Stanford via Vallejo,the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge,a foggy San Francisco and Hig

14、rst-day finish line by the Western Washington Universitys Viking XX,a sleek car under a slanted array of solar cells like a roof of shiny blue tile.The Viking,which reached Stanford with an elapsed driving time of 4 hours,27 minutes,placed fifth internationally in the World Solar Challenge in Austra

15、lia last November.The cars are powered by the sun,but the race itself is powered by the organization and dedication of college students.It started with the Stanford Solar Car Project,a loose collection of 40 or so students who have so far built two solar cars with a little faculty advice and a lot o

16、f hard work.Graduate student Dave Caditz spearheaded the idea of a race that would zig-zag across California and inspire the publics interest in alternative-powered vehicles.The 8th World Solar Challenge will depart Darwin on Sunday 25 September 2005.Scrutineering commences on Thursday 22 September,

17、and most teams spend at least a week in Darwin preparing for departure.The World Solar Challenge is a celebration of achievement,of courage and the application of scientific knowledge in the field of solar technology.This is the adventure of young people not only dreaming of a safer,smarter,greener

18、world,but of skilled young enthusiasts working to make it a reality.The American Solar Challenge The American Solar Challenge(ASC)is a competition to design,build and rayce solar-powered cars in a cross-country event.In 2005 there will be a special edition of ASC,the 2005 North American Solar Challe

19、nge.Teams will compete in a solar vehicle rayce from United States through Canada!In 1997,UniSA,Seaton High School,Fremont-Elizabeth City High and Annesley College formed the South Australian Solar Car Consortium.The aim of the Consortium was to help students design,build and race solar cars in the

20、World Solar Challenge.A solar car races down the street in the World Solar Challenge.Held every two years in Australia,the race began in 1987 and was the worlds first solar car raceThe History of Solar Car Racing Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins pioneered solar car racing when they completed an epic

21、 Solar Trek from Perth to Sydney(Australia)in 1983.What followed was a series of solar car races designed to increase public awareness.The 1987 Australian World Solar Challenge saw 23 participants inaugurate the first such race,followed by the European Tour de Sol,the American Tour de Sol,and the SU
