3、t are the differences between them?In what ways are they similar?The Deheyuan Grand Theatre and the Globe Theatre.Differences:The Deheyuan Grand Theatre is a Chinese-style theatre built in the Qing Dynasty for the royal family,with Peking Opera as the main performance form.The theatre has three stag

4、es representing happiness,prosperity and longevity.Under the longevity stage,there is a well and five ponds.The Globe Theatre was built in London by a group of actors including William Shakespeare.It burnt down in 1613 and was rebuilt close to the site of the original building.The theatre has a roun

5、d shape and the stage area has three main elements.Similarities:Both of the theatres have a long history.They are both specially designed for better stage effects.1 Look at the pictures of two performances and talk about their differences and similarities.Consider the following:lorchestralcostumes a

6、nd maskslstage setlperformers movementsFacts about Peking Opera:1.Peking Opera usually combines music,vocal performance,mime(手势),dance and acrobatics(杂技,杂耍);The form was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China.2.Traditional Chinese

7、musical instruments used in Peking Opera include the jinghu,erhu and yueqin.3.Facial make-up is very important to the aesthetic of Peking Opera.The colours are rich and depict different characters using colour symbolism.4.The costumes,often the most recognisable feature of Peking Opera,are graceful,

8、elegant,and brilliant in colour and design.They tell a characters sex and status at first glance,marking off people from all walks of life,noble or humble,civil or military.Accessories,including helmets and hats,constitute an integral part to bring about dramatic stage effects.5.Stages in most Chine

9、se theatres are square platforms exposed to the audience on three sides,even all sides sometimes.There are very few props on the stage,and they are mostly used symbolically.The most common ones include tables,sedan chairs,flags,horsewhips and weapons.Most attention is focused on the actors and actre

10、sses singing and movements.6.The basic skills of Peking Opera include dance movements and special acrobatic movements while singing or reciting,which are necessary requirements mastered by all actors and actresses.Facts about western operaAn opera is like a play in which everything is sung instead o

11、f being spoken.It incorporates a number of the performing arts,such as acting,scenery,costume,and sometimes dance or ballet.The singers who sing and act out the story are on the stage,and the orchestra is in front of the stage but lower down,in the orchestra pit,so that the audience can see the stag

15、a high school student with English literature as one of my main subjects,I have to!Shakespeares Hamlet is probably the most important play by the most important writer in English.Almost everybody knows“To be,or not to be”,right?Having seen quite a few productions of Hamlet and read the play many tim

16、es,I was full of confidence-until the Peking Opera came to town!2 Dating back to the 18th century,Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history.Does this mean its easier than a Shakespeare play to understand?To find out the answer,I just had to go and see The Revenge of Prince Zidan-the Peking

17、Opera version of Hamlet.3 Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments,the opera brought a completely new sound to my Western ears.At first,I thought what I heard was a violin,but later I learnt that it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu.Then,seeing the main chara

18、cters come on stage,I was surprised!The costumes and masks were amazing.The performers of course sang in Chinese,but the music,exaggerated movements and mime helped get the meanings across to the audience.The voices themselves sounded really unique-some of the female voices were so high that I was s

19、ure they could break glass!And the stage was really simple:a decorated whip represented a horse,and a screen with Chinese characters,a study.Using such techniques,the opera had transformed a small stage into the whole universe.4 Easily my favourite part of the show was how the characters moved on st

20、age.I had never seen Prince Hamlet do a backflip before!That was simply incredible.It was so dazzling and energetic that I wasnt sure if the characters were performers or athletes!Everyone was clapping.5 Before experiencing The Revenge of Prince Zidan,I wasnt sure if I would enjoy it.But,in fact,I w

21、as on the edge of my seat!Feeling the strong emotions of love,anger,fear and grief in the performance,I could easily recognise the theme of Hamlet.So,if you want to see a show that combines music,singing,drama,poetry and costume design with explosive effect,The Revenge of Prince Zidan ticks all the
