In the early 15th century, largesize construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twentyfour emperors of the Ming and the Qing dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public. The Palace Museum is about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east, with a 10meterhigh wall around. In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were from Fangshan and other places. The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After 1949, the Palace Museum is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government. 18When were the buildings of the Forbidden City changed into a museum? AIn 1420.BIn 1949. CIn 1925. 答案:C 19Where was the wood for building from in Ming Dynasty? AHunan and Sichuan. BNortheast of China. CShanxi and Gansu. 答案:A 20What do people do with the Palace Museum? ASpecial measures are made to rebuild it. BIts under special preservation by the Chinese government. CIts open to only foreigners. A More than 2,000 years ago, when the last shovelful (一铲) of dirt fell on the Terracotta Warriors, it was thought that they would never see the sunlight again and would spend the rest of their “lives” guarding and protecting the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shi Huang, who died in 210 BC. But things got better for these clay soldiers. Ever since they were discovered in Xian in 1974, by a group of farmers; theyve been able to see the bigger world traveling from one museum to the next. They are now on display in New York at Discovery Times Square, reported The New York Times. However, the story doesnt end here. The 2,000 soldiers found so far are estimated (估计) to be only one quarter of the total number. Moreover, scientists havent yet dared to touch the central tomb, which is believed to contain the body of the emperor himself. “Partly its out of respect for the elders, ” explained Kristin Romey, consultant for the exhibition. “But they also realize that nobody in the world right now has the technology to properly go in and excavate it.” This is true. According to ancient writings, the emperors tomb is circled by rivers of liquid mercury which is deadly harmful to people but can keep the body in good condition. Studies of the soil around the tomb also found a large amount of mercury. This makes exploring the tomb very dangerous. The other reason is that they are afraid of the damage they might cause by opening the tomb. “When we began excavating the soldiers , the minute they faced the air and sunlight, the paint just went off, ” Romey told the Fox News. But he believes that the solution will come when science highly develops. Perhaps a robot can be sent into the tomb first to investigate and help find out the best way to protect it. In the end, scientists and historians must think twice about how to find the way against the damage their digging might cause. Romey said, “You have to destroy stuff in order to learn about it.” 21What is the point of the passage? ATo tell about the mysteries of Qin Shi Huangs tomb. BTo analyze why archaeology is a destructive science. CTo introduce the Terracotta Warriors exhibition in New York. DTo explain the risks of further excavating Qin Shi Huangs tomb. 22What can we learn from the passage? AIt is estimated that about 10,000 clay soldiers were buried with Qin Shi Huang in his tomb. BThe decision whether to open the tomb is likely to depend on technological progress. CThe deadly harmful mercury was used by Qin Shi Huang to keep grave robbers away. DScientists wont excavate Qin Shi Huangs tomb until they find good ways to keep the body in good condition. 由第四段中的“The 2,000 soldiers found so far are estimated (估计) to be only one quarter of the total number.”可知 A 项错误;由第 六段中的“the emperors tomb is circled by rivers of liquid mercury which is deadly harmful to people but can keep the body in good condition”可知秦始皇使用水银主要 是为了更好地保存自己的遗体,所以 C 项错误;科学家们等待技术发展到一定 程度,直到可以避免对陵墓造成损害的时候再动手开墓,而不是找到办法保存秦 始皇的遗体,故 D 项错误,所以 B 项正确。 23The underlined word “investigate” in the last but one paragraph probably means ________. Aexplore Barrange Ctake over Dsettle down 答案:A词义猜测题。 B Famous art museums have one of the largest collections of art under one roof. Located in New York Citys Museum Mile area, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has over two million works of art within its permanent collection, which is divided into 19 sections of interest. The Mets American paintings section also has one of their earliest sculptures from 1870 on display. Hiram Powers California was one of the first pieces that inspired them to focus on building the museum around American art. Their art section features paintings by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Van Gogh among its 11,000 paintings on hand. The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles is a privatelyrun museum that has a wide collection of European art, Greek and Roman sculptures, and classic drawings. The museum also has an extensive collection of American photography collection, which is one of the only areas within its museum that focuses on American areas of interest. There is also a research center that was opened in 1985, where staff researches information about the artifacts that exist and makes sure that the information being presented can be used in publications and workshops for presentation purposes. The Musee du Louvre in Paris, France, is one of the oldest, famous and most visited museums in the world, known as a place where artists were allowed to showcase their art since the early days in the 1700s. The museum was formally opened in 1750, and much of Frances much neglected artists were allowed to present their works in this museum. They have owned collections of famous artists like Rembrandt and Da Vinci for years and have them up on display to the public. Visitors can view some of the favorite famous pieces, like the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, which has called the Louvre home for centuries. 24According to the passage, ________. AThe Best Art Museum in the World BFamous Works of Art Around the World CFamous Art Museums Around the World DMost Popular Artists Around the World 答案:C标题判断题。 26What does the underlined word “They” refer to in the last paragraph? AFrances neglected artists. BThe Musee du Louvre. CWorks by the artists who were not famous. DVisitors. 根据后面的“have owned collections of famous artists like Rembrandt and Da Vinci for years and have them up on display to the public”及上 一句所述该馆正式开馆时间及不知名的艺术家被允许进来展览作品可以判断, they 顺承上一句指代 the Musee du Louvre。 C Look around the walls of your classroom. Do you see pictures or paintings? Most of the art on show was probably created by yourself and your classmates, using imagination and your own hands. Each year in Toronto thousands of school children make the best use of their imaginations and their creative abilities in workshops provided by an organization called the Inner City Angels. These children work directly with professional (专业的) artists on different art programs. Natalie McHaffie is one of the many professional artists who work with the Inner City Angels. “My purpose is to teach the children about design, ” she says. “Once they learn how to put things together, they can use that knowledge for other things they may want to do, such as making a kite or designi
