They used candle smoke to write their own names on the rock and then walked on. Soon they came to a little stream of water. The cave wall looked like a frozen waterfall. Tom went behind the stone waterfall and found an opening in the rock. They started to walk down into the earth. They went deeper and deeper into the cave. Tom and Becky made many candle smoke marks on the walls to show the way back. It was exciting.They soon found themselves in a huge open space that was full of bats. There were thousands of them. The light from their candles woke up the bats, and they flew at the candle flames. Tom knew this was dangerous, so he took Beckys hand to hurry her away, but one of the bats followed and put out Beckys candle with its wings. The bats followed them for a long time, but Tom and Becky ran into every new passage that they came to, and at last they got away from the bats.Toms trick One day, Tom decided to play a trick on some people in his town. He was carrying a long rope. He stopped a man on the road and said, Could you help me, please? He explained he was doing a project for school. He had to measure the building, and he needed some help. Tom asked the man to hold one end of the rope. Its just for a few minutes, he said. The man was glad to help the young boy. He held the rope in his hand. Then Tom went around the corner. At another side of the building, Tom stopped a woman. He said he was doing a school project of measuring the building. He wanted her to hold the rope. Yes, certainly, she answered gladly. The lady held the rope in her hand. Then Tom went away and left the two people in the street. The man and the woman could not see each other. They held the rope and waited for Tom. But Tom hid behind a wall and watched. He told his friend Ben about this. They both laughed at the two people. “How silly they are ! Tom said.Just then Toms Aunt Polly came up behind them and heard this, but the boys didnt see her. “You naughty boys!” she said angrily.
