He painted one board and surveyed his progress, and then he sat down to have a rest.Tom began to think of the games that he wanted to play. He knew the boys who were free would soon come along and make fun of him. Just then, he had an idea. He picked up his brush and went back to work.Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and carrying an apple.“Im going swimming,” said Ben. “Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, dont you? What a pity!”“Work?” said Tom. “This isnt work. Im enjoying myself. Im the only person that can do it right.”“Oh, please, Tom,” said Ben. “I can do it. Ill be really careful. Ill give you half my apple. Wait, Ill give you all of it.”“Thats a deal,” said Tom. “But you must be careful.”Tom gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He sat down again and started to eat the apple. When Ben got tired, Billy Fisher was waiting. He gave Tom a kite for the chance to paint. More practice: Tom and Becky in the cave Tom and Becky walked into the cave. They held their candles high and saw names and dates which were written on the walls by other people. Suddenly they were in a part of the cave without any writing on the walls. They used candle smoke to write their own names on the rock and then walked on.Soon they came to a little stream of water. The cave wall looked like a frozen waterfall. Tom went behind the stone waterfall and found an opening in the rock. They started to walk down into the earth. They went deeper and deeper into the cave. Tom and Becky made many candle smoke marks on the walls to show the way back. It was exciting. They soon found themselves in a huge open space that was full of bats. There were thousands of them. The light from their candles woke up the bats. And they flew at the candle flames. Tom knew this was dangerous, so he took Beckys hand to hurry her away, but one of the bats followed and put out Beckys candle with its wings. The bats followed them for a long time, but Tom and Becky ran into every new passage that they came to, and at last they got away from the bats.Task A: Conclude the main idea of each paragraph.Paragraph (1): _Paragraph (2): _Paragraph (3): _Task B: According to this passage, ask some questions to others.Question (1): _Question (2): _Question (3): _Task C: Choose the right one and find out the facts. Further reading: Mark Twain was one of the most famous writers in the world. Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but how many know where the pen name “Mark Twain”come from? The answer shows Clemens colorful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms (6 feet) deep. “Twain” is an old-fashioned way of saying ”two”.Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in the humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883). The famous river would become an important theme(主题) in many of his works - who could forget the journey of Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1844)?With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing. On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs. This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its follow-up Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call “The Great American Novel”. The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Huck did not enjoy schooling. It shows in the way he uses languages, in a spoken style.
