1、Whats the matter?Good morning/afternoon, dear judges,Im the candidate NO.6 applying for the junior middle school English teacher. Today my topic is “Whats the matter?”.Im so honored to be here to present my lesson. In order to make it much clear, Ill express my thoughts in the following four aspects
2、, which are teaching background, assessment of performance, teaching plan and teaching reflection. Now Ill present them one by one.The first part of my presentation is teaching background. This topic “Whats the matter?” is the first period of section A, unit 2, book 3 in grade 8, PEP. It mainly intr
3、oduces some conversations about talking about health problem as well as giving advices. Students will increase their knowledge of health problem and know how to ask other peoples health problem and give advices.The second year students in junior middle school have learned English for several years.
4、They are in the stage of code of conduct, whose attention is not so concentrated, but they still have interest in diversified English learning. Therefore Ill present some short videos to them in my teaching process, aiming to attract their attention. In addition, the second year students also lack o
5、f practical ability. So the students will work in groups to discuss todays topic and communicate with each other.After learning the analysis of students, I set up the following three objectives.First of all, knowledge and skill objectives:1. 80% students can grasp the words of body names: arm, mouth
6、, stomach2. All the students can know the new phrases of illness: I have a cold, I have a stomachache, I have a sore back.3. Master the sentence patterns: Whats the matter? I have a cold.Next, process and method objectives:Students can improve their ability of asking peoples health problem in their
7、daily life through performance.Last, emotion, attitude and value objectives:This lesson will help cultivate students awareness that they should exercise every day and keep healthy and strong.Based on the teaching syllabus, I list the teaching key points and difficult points as follow:First are the k
8、ey points:1. Master the key vocabulary: arm, mouth, stomach, cold, tooth, stomachache2. Master the sentence pattern “Whats the matter?” “I have a cold.”Second are the difficult points:1. Know the plural form of “tooth” and “foot”.2. Can talk about health problem and give advices in their daily life.
9、What I have said above is the first part of my presentation, namely teaching background. Next well come to my second part: Assessment of Performance.In the class, Ill mainly adopt formative assessment. Giving timely and effective feedback and evaluation to students performance. Ill organize role-pla
10、ying in my teaching process. For example, some active students with good foundation will come to the front to act as the doctors who is asking the patients health problems. Whatever their performances are, they will be encouraged. If Im satisfied with their performances, Ill reward them a notebook.
11、If students feel a bit difficult in performances, Ill give them some hints for assist.Ill integrate various assessment methods: mutual rating and teachers assessment, to motivate students learning activity and to create an active class atmosphere.After leaning the assessment of performance, lets com
12、e to the third part of my presentation, namely the teaching plan. First are the teaching strategies:In this lesson, Ill mainly adopt communicative method and task-based method. Attracting students attention to the class as well as arousing their enthusiasm of learning English. Ill design some activi
13、ties and tasks, like work in pairs to practice the conversation, role-play and give reports. Students will accomplish these activities through self-learning. In addition, Ill also adopt Situational method in my teaching process.Ill make use of multi-media to reduce strangeness of todays topic: prese
14、nt some videos of hospital life, accompanying with the English recording.Based on the teaching strategies above, I divide my teaching process into the following six steps which are lead-in, presentation, practice, consolidation, summary and homework.Step 1 Lead-in:In this part, Ill adopt audio-visua
15、l lead-in and question lead-in.A short video of hospital life will be showed to the students through multi-media. The students will watch this video with two questions: “what are they doing?”, “Where are they?”After students watching this video, they will tell me that they are seeing doctors in the
16、hospital. Then Ill lead the students in todays topic “Whats the matter?”.The step of lead-in will attract the students attention to the class quickly as well as connecting their daily life to todays topic “Whats the matter?”.Step 2 Presentation:Firstly, Ill show some pictures on different parts of o
17、ur body to the students, including arm, mouth, stomach and so on. Ill point at one picture, saying “this is stomach” for a few times, the other new words are introduced in the same way. Then Ill point at the exact part of my body like stomach to students. Some shy and quiet students will need to spe
18、ak out what is it and to write it on the blackboard. Ill encourage them to do as best as they can. Whether they do well or not, they would be inspired and directed. For example, some students may have a problem in foot and tooths plural form which are feet and teeth.Secondly, in order to focus the s
19、tudents attention on the class. Ill imitate some health problems to the students, such as I have a cold, I have a stomachache, I have a sore back and tell these phrases to the students who will have an intuitive feeling to these phrases.Thirdly, the students will listen to the English records about
20、the sentence patterns “whats the matter?”, “I have ” for several times. Then the students will work in pairs to practice this conversation for a couple of time. After that, Ill invite some students to act on the platform. Whether their performances are good, theyll be encouraged and directed. The we
21、ll performed group will award other students applause.This part not only highlights the key points which is learning the new words, phrases and sentence patterns in this lesson, but also breaks through the difficult points, namely solving the students difficulty in foot and tooths plural form.Step 3
22、: PracticeIn order to make the students master the key vocabulary and sentence patterns in this lesson, I design the following activity-Simon says.5 students will stand in a line on the platform. I say Simon saysto them, they perform it to me. For example, if I said “Simon says he has a stomachache”
23、, students then perform this action to me. And if I said “he has a stomachache”, students should do nothing. The student who is wrong will go back to his seat immediately, and the last one stayed on the platform will be the winner and get a notebook.This activity will help improve the students abili
24、ty of listening and reaction capacity.Step 4 Consolidation:In this step, I design the following tasks to consolidate this lesson.Task 1: Role-playThe students can image that they are doctors in a hospital. One day, there come lots of patients to see the doctor, they need to ask the patients health p
25、roblems and give them advices.The students will be divided into six groups. They will share their ideas within their own groups. During that process, Ill walk around the whole class and give them guidance timely. After that, each group will choose a representative to perform it on the platform. The
26、remaining students are serving as the judges. The best group will gain a notebook. The less performed groups will also be encouraged and inspired.The purpose of this task is to improve the students communication and cooperation skills.Task 2: give reportsThe students will be divided into four groups
27、. They will investigate their group members health problems in their daily life and collect these information together. During that process, Ill walk around the whole class and give them guidance timely. After that, each group will choose a representative to give reports about their group members he
28、alth problem to the whole class. The remaining students are serving as the judges. The best group will gain a pen. The less performed groups will also be encouraged and inspired.The purpose of this task is to improve the students collecting information skill and investigative ability.Step 5 Summary:
29、Students summarize the key vocabulary and sentence patterns they have learned in this lesson. Teacher makes supplements and emphasizes that health is very important that we should do exercise every day and keep ourselves healthy.This checks the students weak points and increases their awareness of v
30、aluing their health.Step 6 Homework:Students are encouraged to search some information about how to stay healthy in daily life. They are supposed to share them next class.Giving open homework here is to guide the students to increase their awareness of valuing their health.We have just finished the

Then lets come to the last part-teaching reflection.According to the new curriculum standard, this class adopts formative assessment and various subjects of evaluation, like teachers assessment and mutual rating to create an active class atmospher
32、e. This class also shows some records of hospital life as well as the English recording, attracting the students attention to todays topic “Whats the matter?”. Lastly, based on the theory of “learning by acting”, the students can deepen their impression of how to ask peoples health problem through performance, improving their ability of self-learning.
