2、tions.Chapter One Background Informationv Theres a chance you could be introduced to everyone from the president of the company to the water delivery staffer.While its key to be kind and gracious to everyone,you will want to have different messages prepared for different people.How you greet people

3、should be related to both their position and to how you will interact with them on a regular basis.Co-workers are people who are basically on the same level as you.They are not subordinates,and not superiors.These people should be met with an introduction,a description of what youll be doing and pos

4、sibly some brief discussion about how your roles will intersect.If youre unsure of how to address people,ask the person who hired you or the individual providing orientation.Some environments prefer a formal approach while others are more casual.v Chapter One Background Information v You may be intr

5、oduced to departments rather than individuals,or you may be asked to stand and introduce yourself during a staff meeting.In this case,have a brief introduction prepared,and be ready to field a few questions about your background and what brought you to the company.Keep in mind,the most important par

7、parties have the benefit of live interaction and can immediately exchange ideas.Since time is important in a small business,maximize each phone call for optimum effectiveness.Prepare yourself before you pick up the phone to help you organize your thoughts and achieve your goal without an unnecessary

8、 second call.Chapter One Background Information v Speaking on the phone remains an important business tool.Many professionals in the workplace have been relying on e-mail as their primary communication tool for years,leaving their phone skills rusty.Some companies decide that their employees are ove

9、rwhelmed by e-mail and want them to get back to using the phone.That means everyone picks up the phone and calls each other rather than engaging in lengthy e-mail conversations.It sounds simplistic but it is a small thing that makes a big difference accomplishing in a two-minute phone call what woul

10、d otherwise take several e-mail exchanges.It helps close business quicker because even IM instant messaging is not a true two-way conversation.There are subtleties that are captured in conversation that cant be gleaned in any other way.You can also convey your passion better.Chapter One Background I
