Even after more than a thousand years have passed, we can still feel the power within its burning eyes, bared teeth and

9、kicking hooves. Night-Shining White, now kept in New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art, is regarded as one of the most significant horse paintings in the history of Chinese art. Its artist, Han Gan, is known for his skill in capturing not only the physical features of the animal, but also its inner s

How Han Gan became a painter: Reading for information Born into a poor family in the early Tang Dynasty, the young Han Gan had to help support his family by working in a local wine shop. His artistic talent was discovered by accident when he was sent to the poet Wang Weis

12、 house to collect payment for some wine. Reading for information While waiting at the gate, Han Gan used a stick to draw pictures in the dirt and was seen by the poet himself. Wang Wei decided to sponsor the young man to study painting and recommended him to a master. Due to Han Gans natural talent

16、ve with the stable workers for quite some time. The horses, whether resting or on the move, offered him plenty of inspiration. The more time he spent observing these animals, the more his understanding of them grew. Day after day, Han Gan painted the horses, his brush presenting every detail that he

He is best known for his traditional ink paintings of horses, birds, and landscapes. Born into a poor family in 1895 in

31、Yixing, Jiangsu Province, he began to study Chinese works, calligraphy and Chinese paintings with his father during his childhood. Application And in his youth, he used to go abroad to learn painting twice, respectively in Japan and Paris. He also traveled to several European countries, which allowe

32、d him to observe and imitate Western art techniques. Application After his return to China, he taught at Peking Universitys School of Art at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei and taught at National Central University (now Nanjing University) successively. After the founding of the Peoples Republic of Ch

33、ina in 1949, he served as the President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Chairman of the Chinese Artists Association. Application Due to Mr. Xus early-age experience, he was a master of both oils and Chinese ink. Most of his works, however, were in the Chinese traditional style. He was good a

34、t using free brushstrokes, very few lines and only ink as well as using different shades of ink to show light and shadow. Application One of his masterpiece named Racing Horse, reflecting his painting style. Under Xus brushstrokes, horses are muscular, lean and full of energy, as if running at high
