Book III Module 3 The Violence of Nature Knowledge Aims: Students can master some key words: disaster, experience, cause, bury, occur, violent, strike ; Some Phrases: pick up, take off, be in ruins, make contributions to, take actions to do sth; Students can learn how to describe a natural disaster. Ability Aim: Students can read the passage fluently and get some related information quickly and correctly, so that students reading ability can get promoted. Emotional Aim: Encourage students to raise students self-protection awareness. Teaching Methods: Teachers instruction to help students get better understanding to the passage; Students individual work, pair work and group work to take an active part in the class; Teaching Importance: Make students master some related words, phrases and sentence patterns; Help students make sense of the whole passage and learn how to describe a natural disaster. Teaching Difficulties: How to improve students reading and writing abilities; How to arouse students to participate in the class and talk actively. Teaching Aids: With the help of the Multi-media. Teaching Procedures Step I. Lead-in A short Video. By watching a short video, arouse students interest in learning the passage. Brainstorming. By asking students “What do you know of other disasters?” to warm the class up. Step II. Read for Main Idea Students read the passage quickly and quietly to match each paragraph with their main idea. By this step, students can have a general understanding to the whole passage. Meanwhile, ask students the relationship between part2 and part3. Step III. Read for Detailed Information 1. Part 3 Read Charles Coghlans story to finish the questions and fill in the blanks:What happened in New York? What happened in Galveston ? How can he traveled and returned to Canada after he died? Show students a Place Circle, and then lead students to learn about the strength of the hurricane by the information of the Place Circle. 2. Part1&2 Finish the form by reading the Part 1&2 carefully. 3. Summary: Filling in the form, students can have a detailed understanding to the tornado and hurricane. After reading it, students will have a check to make sure they really know it. Step IV. Read for Language By learning the tornado and hurricane, students can learn how to describe them from these five aspects: Definition, Speed, Place, Strength and Effect. Let students pick out the words, phrases and sentences to describe them in the textbook. Discuss in groups to conclude some other expressions about these aspects. Step V. Language for Use Write down the composition to describe the phenomenon in the short video and evaluate their composition with their desk mates. Homework Write down and polish the composition.
