B We can express thoughts and feelings and send sounds and pictures on our smartphones today. We also communicate using programs like Skype and Face

、Time. We cant send tastes, smells or touch like people do in the real world, of course. Professor Adrian David Cheok at City University in London is trying to develop a way for smartphones to do just that. To give users a sense of taste, researchers designed two electrodes(电极)that are placed on the

、tongue. A chemical process creates different tastes through molecules(分子)on the surface of the tongue. This chemical process sends electrical signals that convince the brain that a person is tasting something. They have already created sour, salty, sweet and bitter tastes. “You put your tongue betwe

、en these two silver electrodes and then it stimulates your tongue electrically and you get a virtual taste sense in your brain.” A device called Scentee permits users to have the sense of smell. Scentee plugs into a smartphone and can spray(释放)tiny clouds of fragrances (气味), including flowers, fruit

、 and coffee. Professor Cheok says the person speaking can activate the device. “Basically what happens is that we have an app, it connects to the Internet and then this will release a scent from your mobile phone.” Scentee holds a container with about 100 different smells. The container must be repl

、aced when all the scents run out. The sense of touch comes from a ring-like device. It is connected wirelessly to the smartphone. The device sends a soft, electrical squeeze (挤压)when a person on the other end of a telephone conversation does the same. Professor Cheok says this permits a kind of wire

、less touch communication. “I can be in London and my friend can be in Tokyo, and I can squeeze my finger and then hell get a squeeze on his finger through the Internet. Its a way of touch communication with small mobile devices.” 24.Which of the following functions of smartphones is NOT referred to

、in the text? A. Sending tastes. B. Sending smells. C. Sensing the owners feelings. D. Touching people you are communicating with through the phone. 25. The order of the process in which people can feel tastes through smartphones is . A chemical process creates different tastes on the tongue. Put the

Which of the following has a similar meaning to the underlined word “activate” in the third paragraph? A. Adjust. B. Encourage. C. Promote. D. Operat

、e. 27. The text is intended to . A. explain a new kind of technology B. describe some future uses of smartphones C. show the effects that smartphones have on people D. advise people to keep in close contact through smartphones C What defines an eco-house? There are two features to take into consider

、ation. Firstly, the energy efficiency and carbon emissions associated with running the house, and then the type of construction materials used, their associated emissions and the raw materials required. At Baufritz, we have won awards relating to the sustainability of our houses. This is because as

、a company we had decided to put environmental stewardship at the core of our values way back in the 1960s. So how do we do it? Heating is the biggest emissions factor for any house. It is really rather simple to solve this problem make a house extremely energy efficient and this will no longer be a

、factor. Ultra low energy houses have become known as Passive houses, where a certain set of design characteristics help to improve efficiencies. You need a very high level of insulation in the walls and roof. Glass should be suitably positioned to optimize solar gaintucmrr (heat from the sun). The h

、ouse needs to be very well engineered so no heat is lost through cracks or poorly fitted windows and doors. At Baufritz we manufacture Kit houses, and use Modern Manufacturing Methods in our factory to engineer our houses in such a way that leaks are minimized. We have also developed “HOIZ” insulati

、on. Manufactured from natural wood waste products, HOIZ is placed between the inside and outside layers of our timber framed houses to create the highest level of insulation. Our windows and doors use triple glazing to minimize heat loss. Overheating is one of the biggest challenges Passive houses f

、ace and our architects use some very clever ventilation systems to manage internal environmental conditions. All houses still have energy-consuming appliances, but with the addition of solar for both electricity generation and water heating, the carbon footprint of the homes we produce are further r

、educed. Embedded carbon in building manufacturing materials such as concrete, as well as a historic tendency to send materials to landfills, results in a high carbon footprint and natural resource exploitation. Baufritz addresses this problem in a number of ways. Our primary manufacturing material i

、s wood. We source from sustainable certified forests where felled trees are replanted. In fact, we believe all building materials should be as natural as possible. We say no to PU construction foams, chemical insulation materials, toxic adhesives and laminate flooring. A house constructed using only

、 natural materials creates a healthy living environment for its residents. As all our houses are manufactured in our state-of-the- art factory, waste is kept to an absolute minimum. At the end of their life-cycle, our houses can also be recycled. Today, demolition(拆除)firms clearing the site for the

、new build are able to recycle nearly all of the building materials, therefore closing the manufacturing loop. My house is old, so why is this relevant? There are still lots of things which can be done. Improve your insulation. When your appliances expire, replace based on efficiency. Consider heat p

、umps instead of gas boilers and explore solar to deliver electricity and water heating. By designing and building houses to ultra low energy standards, and by using natural sustainably sourced materials and recycling the waste products from our manufacturing processes, we are able to deliver Carbon

、Neutral Houses. This means that the total carbon footprint throughout the life-cycle of each house is zero, which is why we call ourselves eco-house pioneers. All houses are prefabricated at our state-of-the-art factory in Erkheim, Germany, and then assembled on site. 28. According to the passage, w

、hich of the following is NOT associated with the sustainability of eco-houses? A. The raw materials used. B. Energy efficiency of the house. C. Carbon emissions released by house designers. D. Construction materials used and their emissions. 29. From the passage it can be inferred that Passive house

、s . A. fail to optimize solar gain B. need to be carefully engineered to trap heat C. use more energy-consuming appliances than Kit houses D. could have less comfortable environmental conditions inside them 30. Which of the following statements is true about the way Baufritz builds houses? A. House

、recycling is an additional service provided free by Baufritz. B. Building materials are obtained from factories to ensure their quality. C. Man-made materials are applied to reduce their impact on the environment. D. The houses are all manufactured in their factory so as to reduce costs and waste. 3

、1. The purpose of the passage is to . A. argue for the necessity of eco-houses B. advertise Baufritz, an eco-house builder C. explain the underlying values of eco-houses D. expand peoples knowledge of what eco-houses are D The olinguito(小型犬浣熊)is new to science, although it has been living in the clo

、ud forests of South America for some time, unknown to researchers. The olinguito is a hairy orange-brown creature with a sweet face and big eyes. The animal has small, rounded ears and lives in the trees. An adult weighs one kilogram and measures about 75 centimeters, with half of those centimeters

、taken up by its ringed tail. Most of the time, it likes to eat fruit, although it also eats meat. Active at night, the animal has lived in Colombia and Ecuador for a long time. But the olinguito did not exist in science books before. Kristofer Helgen is the curator (馆长) of mammals at the Smithsonian

、 Institutions National Museum of Natural History in Washington. He led the research team that confirmed the existence of the olinguito. It had been mistaken for a look-alike animal - the similar but larger olingo (尖吻浣熊)。 “Think about these foggy and dense cloud forests. This animal, like so many ani

、mals in the rainforest, only comes out at night. It doesnt come out of the trees. Its wet. Its dark. Its hard to find these animals.” About 10 years of work led Kristofer Helgen from museum storage areas to cloud forests in South America. He got lucky when he communicated with a zoologist in Ecuador

、. The animal expert there made a short video that showed what scientists say is an olinguito in the trees. It confirms that the olinguito is different from the olingo. Mr. Helgen says even people who live near the olinguitos forests do not see it different from similar animals. 32. What can we learn

、 about the olinguito from the text? A. It has a preference for meat. B. It is much larger than the olingo. C. It was described in some science books. D. It and the olingo are very similar in appearance. 33. Why is it hard for people to find the olinguito? A. It is too small. B. It only comes out at night. C. It spends all its time eating in the trees. D. Peoples eyesight there is not very good. 34. What does the underlined word “It” refer to? A. The tree. B. The video. C. The animal. D. The study. 35.
